I'll probably work to some capacity for the rest of my life...but I do plan to slow down and semi retire and when I do I will have a house somewhere on a beach in the islands, close to a marina and a tiki bar.

Uhhh those aren't social programs. I pay into that shite. I fully expect to get my fair and proper use of them. I'll repeat, I PAID INTO THE SYSTEM

I'd thought seriously about doing that. Finally decided to keep working part time since I enjoy it. Also bought a beautiful chunk of land near the Florida Gulf and will live out our lives there. Will be buying more or less the same truck as yours, a truck bed camper, a boat, fishing kayaks, and getting a dog. In the long haul I think I'll prefer that to full time life on the road; though I've done that for several months at a time and really enjoyed it.

I also think you're trolling, but people pay into those two systems

they're not paying for their own retirement/future medical care. they're paying for the recipients' retirement/medical care

social security and medicare are welfare programs. they are not "investment" programs individualized. if they were, then you could monetize your SS/medicare and we could all stop paying and there would be funds to fund the current outlays for current recipients. since we cannot, then it is a welfare plan.

Lots of people are doing that. It seems like an appealing life for 1-3 years.

We've talked about it and both agree we would probably spend the first year or so traveling across the country from place to place then after that settle down to where we stay somewhere south in the winters and somewhere north in the summers. I think with it just being the two of us, living in a 5th wheel would not be an issue. The way they've got them set up now, they've got everything you'll need and all the comforts of home.

you pay all sorts of taxes for things that you don't get to use. these programs are only slightly different than those (as in if you die, your family can get some sort of SS funds for a bit in specified manners. you don't get to "keep" anything you paid for medicare)

if these systems were fully funded by previous payments, we could stop paying and they would be funded for current recipients

they're just another welfare program and one of my goals in life is to end both before our system collapses under their weight

I'm looking for a lake lot to retire to. The good ones are pretty expensive and those that are more affordable often have neighbors that are TAF.

Side note - sort of on topic: I'm eligible for a pension from a job I had earlier in life. Received correspondence the other day from the plan admin offering me a one-time, lump sum payoff. Don't have details yet but it sounds a little iffy to me. I'm sure they're looking out for themselves rather than my future well being.

Oh yeah. We're planning on grandkids. We'll come down to visit them and during the summers have them come spend a few weeks with us.

I half expect that I may somehow be means tested out of those by the time I'm up, but if not, I will happily have zero qualms using those to supplement what I've saved to enjoy my later years, hopefully in some mountain cabin somewhere in Western N. Carolina.

I don't think I could spend two nights in a 5th wheel, I'd much rather just stay at a hotel

Right not, the plan is to retire at 46. in 5 years. Whoot.

As to what we will do, I suspect we will travel internationally for a month a year. Spend summers in Denver, and winters in new orleans. Probably do a lot of bird watching. Maybe get some contract work.

1. Do you realize how filthy hotel rooms are? You're basically wallowing in strangers piss, jizz, and lord knows what else.

2. Have you looked at what a modern 5th wheel has to offer?

I'd reconsider this plan. After a year you will probably, and your wife will definitely, be tired of the road and want a house again. You will sell all of these toys at a loss and have to move into a shittier house than you were previously accustomed to. At that point, your wife will leave you with half of your retirement.

I'm going to buy rental properties with crappy floors then make the tenants replace the floors themselves. Then I can sell the house for major profits.
