The drive through daiquiri places is what I miss.

also I get things about how dirty NO is, references to people pissing on the street corner. I always remind them that locals have/know where to piss and that it is usually some tourist pissing the corner.

...that being said I have pissed the corner before

Without fail it is a stupid question about atleast one of these five topics:

1) the Mardi Gras
2) Crawfish
3) Katrina
4) Alcohol amazement i.e. Drive through daqs or the French Quarter (specifically Bourbon)
5) The swamp or the bayou or some stupid reference about how my house sinks every year.

That would be the #1 response. To which I reply, that's because I am from New Orleans, not from SoLA where there may be Cajuns, or North LA (which I explain is akin to east Texas or south Arkansas in dialect. I explain that NOLA has a variety of actual dialects within the city and am from Gentilly (the 7th Ward) and thus don't sound like the 9th Ward or the Irish Channel when I talk.

The #2 response has to do with our state's reputation for corruption. There's usually a smirk or a snicker and a murmur of Huey Long's name or just "corrupt politics." I say other than Chicago, we're the northern-most Banana Republic where our politics is concerned. Not what you know, but who you know and who you pay off.

Well being from out-of-state I usually ask people questions to get an idea on how they feel about Bobby Jindal. Seems everybody has an opinion.

Depends on where you're at.

Midwest: you're a cool sum bitch
NE: you might as well be a part of swamp people

Their first response usually is "How come don't you have the same accent as those swamp guys do?"

Women love my accent. I call them gnats because they will hang around me just to hear me talk. I get asked to say water a lot.

I usually get asked if I'm just in Montana for college, and then sometimes "but you don't have an accent...?" at which point I start talking like a bumpkin from Ville Platte to satisfy them.

Having a stereotypical neutral accent really does throw people off.

Most Texans assume you're a coonass, New Yorkers want to know about Katrina, people from the Midwest always ask about hunting. That's my experience at least.
