And the DE blades themselves cost - literally, pennies.
Just picked up a box of 100 Persona blades for 12 bucks.

I have a starter email that I send to friends sometimes. I will dig it up and post it here later.

how I do it is still wet shaving isn't it?
I would say no - because it is a term of art. "Wet shaving" strongly implies either DE safety or straight razor and actual brush, soap, cream, etc. not a can/hot lather, whatnot.
There are some cats that use catridges with a wet shaving soap/cream in a bowl applied with a brush - but even those would be considered hybrids.
What you're doing is what I would call "late 20th Century" commercial shaving.

If I get a good shave from them, and millions of men do, why is it less than optimal?
While we've gone into some things in the thread - there is no way to get the same quality of shave from a cartridge as is possible with a DE or straight razor. Heck, I realized that in the 80s when my barber would use lather and a shavette to do my neckline. I thought "man, my face could never be that smooth" - and now it is.
You may disagree, but as I've done both types of shaving, I tend to defer to my opinion, particularly for my face and beard.

Where did I attack or degrade how you do it?
Sorry if I jumped the gun with you, Sarge - we typically get one or more "too cool for school" cartridge defenders in the thread who call us "Dapper Don" or whatnot.

I'm in here reading the posts to learn
I'll try not to lose sight of that.
We cool.

For the guy asking about Proraso... Probably nobody selling it in BR.
What the f*ck are you guys doing going to "stores"? It's 2015. Amazon.com - BAM - Proraso Red, 4 tubes for $32 delivered to my mailbox.

So what's the advantages of a product like that over a regular soap with lotion in it? I went to lotion soap because I got razor burn with regular shaving gels.

I would assume because it is designed for shaving (of course, so is the chemsoap I rail about). If your soap works for you - go ahead, but if you make the jump, I recommend you try something from Bigelow, Col Conk or Proraso (even if you don't go whole hog on the expensive stuff) and see what a difference it makes.
For example - I used to be a Gillette Edge man, myself - and would still use it in a pinch if I had to go back to that aisle in Wal-Mart - but I didn't like that stuff being near my eyes. Now, with any of the Proraso (and I started with Omega soap - also by Proraso) - I can get it in my mouth and it doesn't bother me. Now, I wouldn't recommend eating it for a meal, but that sums up my satisfaction with the switch.
When I first started with the Proarso Red (Sandalwood) - Mrs. Midnight said, "I like it when you shave in the morning, because the scent lingers in there until after I get up."
She never said that about any of that spray can crap.
Let me ask you this, Sarge: Do you think you can load a brush and build a good lather with your regular lotion soap? If so, go for it. If not, at least give a quality mid-level wet shaving soap or cream a chance.

I'm going to order some.

How much is a quality badger brush? $30?
What does everyone use a post shave treatment?
Anywhere in Baton Rouge that sells Merkurs?

Anyone have anything cool they want to brag about?
$3 a month with dollarshaveclub and 1 can of barbasol = $4.50 total a month to shave, and I shave my head to the scalp and my face every weekday. Why anyone would bother paying more than that is beyond me.

I think it has a lot to do with the ritual of prepping the cream and using the badger brush.
Some people love it.

Definitely. Making shaving something you look forward to is a huge factor.
Also if anyone is looking to try some new blades, TryABlade.com is a really cool website where you can order any quantity up to 5 of any blade. I just bought 3 each of 6 different types of blades (18 total) for 6 bucks after shipping.

Edwin Jagger De89bl, Proraso sandalwood, feather blades.
I usually keep a light beard and just shave neck and along cheekbones, so I mostly use the Dreadnought Avenger brush. It's got a smaller profile.
I've got a Bloc Osma Alum Block and a styptic pencil for the inevitable cuts.
As for aftershave, I usually just use cheap drug store brands. I'm partial to the Old Spice cologne and a cream whose name escapes me at the moment.

Where can you buy a Merkur safety razor in Baton Rouge?
Posted on 1/20/15 at 3:37 pm to CBandits82
You can't. But you can get them on Amazon. Two days if you have prime.

Salon by New Balance in Town Center and Art of Shaving at the MOL both sell handles. I think AOS has Merkur and maybe one other brand of safety razors.

Negative ghostrider, both the Art of Shaving store and some salon by New Balance in Town Center sell razors. A couple of other places (think places like Perlis or McLavy's/men's fine clothier) probably carry some razors.

A good hot shower, then hop out of shower while the whiskers are soft and easily shavable and dry shave with a Gillette Fusion. All you soft tacos and your elaborate shaving equipment.
