High water tables preclude the former in most places around here, but you can get the latter installed.

I'm in Alabama, but we have a 6x12 room that is completely made from reinforced cinder blocks, and it has a rebar/concrete roof that is under our front porch. It will leak a little in a bad storm, but it is 3 sides underground, and the only opening is a small door into our garage/basement. I can get in there with the entire family and shut the door and feel pretty safe.

Does it lock from the inside or the outside?

I'm wedged between a major fault line and an active volcano. If shite goes south a safe room isn't going to help me.

I have a storage area under the stairs in my house that is located very near to the middle of the structure. I've never gone in there in bad weather but it's what I would use if things got really rough.

At least the volcano will perfectly preserve your body for later study.

I excel at pointing out the upside of almost any situation.

If I was to build a custom house I would probably design an interior room (pantry, master closet maybe) with reinforced block walls and a concrete ceiling.

Currently if a tornado was imminent the unreinforced master closet would have to work.

There is a bathroom right in the center of my house that my roommate says is in between the highest concentration of support beams.

I've got a big piece of particle board in the back of my closet that fits exactly over the bathtub and has a cabinet handle in the center of it so I can pull it in place. My luck - I'll get my arm ripped off or turn into a helicopter.

I've had a couple tornadoes come within a half mile of my house the last few years so I'm probably overthinking the situation but I don't care.

Tornado room/safe room.

Equipped with firearms, ammo, rations, and a bucket.

Building a new house, didn't put one in. Way I see it, if I get one I'm screwed, and I'm old. Kids will have the insurance money.

When I was stationed in Lawton/Fort Sill Oklahoma the house I had built had a tornado shelter dug in the back yard. Nothing fancy but it would have worked. Don't have much here other than a structurally safe house that would be ok vs most hurricanes (we're North of Covington, btw)... A tornado would hurt.

The worst case scenario estimates are around 10,000 dead. I figure that's pretty good odds in a metro of four million. And if it takes out Seattle then I'm sitting on prime real estate. I rent though so FML.

Doesn't lock at all. Has a closer door on it.
