You'd have been prosecuted once you returned to the US

Wait, what?

You're prosecuted for doing something that (albeit sick) is not a crime where it took place?

Yep. The U.S. doesn't want its citizens traveling to other countries to have sex with kids.

I don't like it either. But alot of states are 16 and it's honestly a good cutoff imo.

I didn't know that. I like that. Is there a link to the law and how it's applied?

Yep, and rightfully so IMO. Pretty sure it falls under the PROTECT Act of 2003 which was designed in part to stop "sex tourism."

Basically you cannot have sex with someone under the age of 18 while outside of the US or you risk prosecution once you return.

No prostitutes under the age of 18 and no sex at all with anyone under the age of 16.

This. It's a public policy concern. The wife and I visited Thailand in the past year and it was obvious that there were tons of German and English men looking for a young kids to sleep with. It was unsettling.

In regards to the US, I'm very pro-states individual rights to make laws, but (very much like the drinking age), I believe we should have a uniform age of consent.

Does that apply to all crimes, or just sex tourism?

Yeah it's a great policy we have. It prevents people from traveling to bumfrickistan to engage in acts that would otherwise have no consequences.

There are a number of articles on the topic, but here is one from the ICE website.

I understand the sentiment behind it, but those ages are bullshite.

So you could have consensual sex with a 15 year old in Arkansas, but not amsterdam?

I'm not promoting it but applying the puritanical age of 18 to other countries is dumb

18 is a cultural phenomenon.

The scary thing about that map is the "no data" areas.
