We talk about 18, but look at the ages of consent around the world.

The Ukraine thread got me thinking. Why the arbitrary age of 18? Looking around the world, it seems far and away that 18 is not the norm. And outside of our southern neighbor (12 Mexico? 12!? Wtf is wrong with you!?)
And some middle eastern shithole (9!?!? You can just GTFO)
It seems to almost puritanical that our Federal laws make 18 the cut off.
What is the reasoning behind this? Should we see a change in the way laws are written, especially in this new digital age?
Is the rest of the world simply populated by creepy uncles and we are somehow the gold standard, or are we fooling ourselves in some sort of prudish nonsense.
Given that marriages of 15-16 year olds to grown men was not uncommon less than a century ago, what caused the shift?
The suffrage movement?
And should it be changed to reflect an increasingly sexualized world?

Because if you are aren't even a teenager, something is fricked up.
By 18 they are well into sexual maturity. At 12 they still need a babysitter.

Isn't it a crazy coincidence that the most successful countries on the planet require marriage before sex? Our country could be that great too if we treated marriage with such reverence.
