Well, first, it's not a refund. Second, it is kind of a handout. Other countries don't necessarily have this type of deduction in their tax systems.

The population at large isn't wasting their money on drugs

The article specifically notes that multiple studies indicate drug use is not more common among the poor than it is in the general population.

Whether those studies are correct or not I can't say, but if they are then she may have a valid point.

ETA: For example, would you be okay with a mortgage interest deduction that requires you not spend any of it on beer?

I can't believe people think a tax break is the same as getting money from the government. Only in the case of the Pell Grant is the government ultimately giving money to people. Otherwise, they are still making a buck off of them through taxes.

I know I have to be subjected to drug tests in order to receive a pay check, so why can't everyone else, no matter what the situation. Hell, as a taxpayer, we are paying the government, so we should require all politicians and government employees to be subjected to drug tests.

There are 26 state and federal assistance programs designed for the needy and poor.

Now 27 with subsidies for Obamacare.

Stop all the madness, please!

Yeah, but if I want to buy drugs, I work and pay for them.
Nobody gives me free drugs.

I guess I don't understand that then, because I thought it was a refund of the interest you paid in on your own mortgage. Is that not correct?

Well, without the break, you'd otherwise owe those taxes.

Not everyone does though. I don't.

No. It's a deduction, not a credit, and there are limitations with respect to the deduction.

The studies i've seen support this, but that isn't relevant imo.

My point had nothing to do with which group does drugs more. My point was, if you are receiving government assistance, you shouldn't have enough money to purchase drugs.

And for arguments sake, I'd have no problem not spending my mortgage interest refund on beer, because I have a fricking job and that isn't my only income.
