I've lived here since 2000 and my personal favorites are (in no particular order):

National Cathedral
Changing of the Guard (this will take some time but is worth it)
Library of Congress (and the Supreme Court is next door, also pretty good)

Be advised the Washington Monument is closed for earthquake repairs. Even when it is open the line to get tickets is outrageous.

Outside the city the NRA's firearms museum is simply outstanding, as is the US Marine Corps museum in Quantico. The Baltimore Aquarium is too.

National Cathedral

Is one of the most impressive and beautiful buildings in America.

ETA: Sorry. Confusing it with the National Shrine. I've never been to the National Cathedral, but I would recommend the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

Amazing place. R.E.Lee never went back after the Civil War, knowing that the Union began burying its dead on his property. I read that he did pass it once while on a boat trip down the Potomac -- but didn't even look at his old home.

The National Cathedral is really awesome. I think it's the 4th or maybe 6th largest church in the world. Really beautiful building, styled very similar to much older churches in Rome, Florence, etc... but with modern touches. (stained glass with moon rock)

Both The National Cathedral and The National Shrine are impressive.

National Shrine is indeed nice but I think you were right that the Cathedral is one of the most impressive in America. Plus the tours are very well done.

Besides, you gotta love a cathedral where one of the gargoyles is in the shape of Darth Vader, and another one is a cameraman pointing at the Russian Embassy.

Yep but his son (George Washington Custis Lee) won a Supreme Court case and regained control of the property. He then sold it back to then US for a hefty sum. I dunno if selling it back to the US was always his intention, but I'd imagine there was little he could personally do with the property considering it was full of buried soldiers.

That does put a damper on the property value. Lee's boyhood home in Olde Town Alexandria is a nice spot, too. My son went to Washington & Lee University. The Lee Chapel on campus is beautiful.

I did Washington in a day. It's cool, but you miss so much. I recommend eating at Ben's Chili Bowl. It's one of the most popular restaurants in the city.

Ah, takes me back to my drinking days in Georgetown. A good place to eat after a few pops at Nathan's. (R.I.P., Nathan's).
