nurse, you need to come for a week so that you can make day trips to Mount Vernon and Civil War battlefield sites such as Manassas and The Wilderness in addition to seeing the regular tourist sights.

I would have said a week, too. Mount Vernon is a neat experience. I actually got interviewed by a local radio station on 2/22 (GW's birthday) one year. I drove down with a friend to UVA one day while I was there and we stopped by The Wilderness. That place is extremely neat, if you are interested in Civil War History in the slightest.

Yeah we would try to aim for 5-7 days if we could swing it.

Will def do

Iona...thanks for the suggestions as well

I realize we won't see everything we can in such a short amount of time. I would just like to make the trip a great time for my political junkie husband.

Highly recommended... Had guns I didn't even know existed, numerous Teddy Roosevelt's guns, and a ton of guns from Movies (Die Hard, Dirty Harry, etc...)

We were there for a day this past December. Toured the White House, saw Lincoln memorial, Washington Monument, Vietnam War Memorial and Capitol Building. All very walkable. If you go on a Saturday night or Sunday it is best because street parking is free. Parking is pretty expensive there otherwise.

How could I forget about Mt. Vernon

3rd floor of the main house is only open December - 1st week of January. The Grist mill is open April through October. His distillery is still there and makes great bourbon

Just got back from there a few weeks ago. Natural History museum is a must. Shoot over to the National Archives since there shouldn't be a line to see the documents at this time of year. Then go walk the National Mall at night. Catch Dinner at Old Ebbitt's Grill right by the WH.

I really think every HS should bring kids there. It would be hard to do but they need to see our history.

Another museum that I haven't seen yet is the USMC museum in Quantico. I pass by it everytime I go to court in Stafford or Spotsylvania. I need to see the flag that was raised on Iwo Jima.

If you want a good view of the city, go to Arlington House in Arlington National Cemetery. Now that is a view.

Or the Kennedy gravesite at Arlington National Cemetery.

Which is right below The Custis-Lee Mansion (Arlington House).

The whole cemetery is a must. I could spend days there. You can literally feel the weight of history. It's thick in the air. Truly an awe inspiring place.

I actually dislike what they have had to do with the changing of the guard. I hate that they have to give a speech telling people to be quiet and respectful. How stupid and disgusting we have become as a country? They shouldn't have to say a word. Everyone there should know.

If you only have one day, I'd skip the indoor guided tours and anything you have to wait in line for. Bike tour or Segway tour might be ok cause they're quicker than walking.

I'd say don't miss Jefferson Memorial and changing of the Guard at Arlington (its quick subway ride away and happens every hour). Those were my favorites. Lincoln Memorial at night is don't miss.

The museums are too time consuming for a single day. If you're going to pick one or two, see the dinosaur exhibit at Natural History and/or the war exhibits at America History museum.
