Washing machine finally dies (or I just killed it)

First off, it is the washing machine, not the dish washer (she is fine and is going to pick up our daughter at soccer practice).
The problem with the washing machine was it would not spin dry and it was not the lid switch. The motor would come on, just not spin the drum. When I took it apart, the drum would free spin when I was trying to take the large nut off, under the agitator. I finally get down to the motor, gear box, and the axle. I make the HUGE mistake of taking the cover off the gearbox (in the middle of my kitchen). I didn't know it was slap full of oil (it actually passed through my mind before I opened it, but I figured it might be grease, not oil).
Well, I gave up the ghost right there. I figure it is over 10 years old and wasn't the high dollar washer to begin with.
There was some shavings all over the top of the motor, but they looks plastic.
Did I just make a $500 mistake or was it dead before surgery?

Just run to a Speed Queen dealer and buy a new washing machine.

I will not even attempt to answer this with the likes of Napoleon prowling the board.
however, I did laugh when I read about your lubrication of the kitchen floor.

Just say it was about to die anyway and move on. You gave it a mercy killing.

Have you checked to see how much a new gearbox costs?

I was thinking about getting a new motor, gearbox, axle assembly, because these basically make up one part, but figured these will make up 80% of the cost of a new one, and I got my $500 out of it over the last 10 years.

As said Speed Queen. Don't look back.

It sounds like the plastic coupling between the motor and the gearbox broke. Give me a sec I will find a link.
Probably a $2 part. I have already broken this thing down about 6 moths ago to change out the bottom seal on the outer drum.

Go ahead and buy a new washing machine and upgrade the dishwasher also.

craigslist is great for appliances, usually your city will have a rebuilder that sells whatever you need.
