Been down 8 hours so far. No one can access money, transfers or take payments or even see their merchant balance. Pretty crazy. I'm sure it's screwed a lot of small businesses over today. A lot of people only have one point of sale service.

It’s why you should always carry some cash as a customer/consumer
Technology is great until it isn’t working and then you’re fricked

Have you really circled back to that one?

Need police to do something about theft first

It's not about theft. Management doesn't want the responsibility of trying to teach our recent public school graduates how to make change, and they don't want to have to count cash drawers at the beginning and end of each day.

Can they not take offline payments? Seems like something that should be implemented.

They don't take cash, have no way to make change since there is no drawer, etc. These are mostly quick service restaurants at the moment. Taco Bell also announced they were going digital payments only.
Start paying attention to how many times you see the 2020 era "Due to the national coin shortage" signs near registers. Those places are next.

I was asking about Square offering offline payments when their network goes down.

Your other option is to make sure you have a 3rd party ATM within reach. Restaurants are a great example, hell try and make money off rent or own it yourself. Sure a boutique shop can't do this, but plenty of "cash only" restaurants do.

They do, but the instructions would be useless for the average nail salon GM. I understand how to trigger offline mode after reading the FAQ, but your average Joe isn't going to get it.
For instance, the register knows whether it's connected to the Internet or not as the seemingly primary trigger to fall back into offline mode. Yesterday's outage was on Square, not on the Internet. This means the terminal is going to keep trying the unavailable Square network, because it knows it's still connected to the Internet. The cashier would likely have to forcibly disconnect the Internet at the location to trigger offline mode.

Only carry cash. It’s never gone down.

You can run offline but it started working this morning. I'm trying tu get refunded for an instant transfer. I had to pay 1.6% to transfer because I couldn't send my next day transfer yesterday.
I keep the weeks credit card sales in square until Thursday night usually then move it to write checks Friday.
I pay an average of 3.2% to process with square because most of my transactions are over phone or online.

You are almost right. Each processor has their own individual cost of operation. Some are significantly lower than others. Except for major franchises/corporate negotiated agreements, I can beat them. It’s a competitive market, and I win the competition almost every time. But go ahead and keep pissing money away. They gotta eat too.
