In interviews yesterday they said that he and his son took their only vehicle. His wife called him and said that the fire was across the street from their house

How does this happen? I feel like there is more to the story here if that is the case. If its night they should of been able to see the fire given the time of year, and if it was day they could see the smoke. I mean how far did they drive to see the fire and it all of a sudden get to the house? Just seems odd to me, I know life happens but still.

Luckily the kids were 9 and 12, I have to assume there is a great chance they ran to the next house and met up with someone. But it is certainly not good that the wife never called the husbands phone once they were safe.

Some of you have never seen a wildfire before and it's painfully obvious. You guys think the fire just creeps slowly through the forest? Those fires can acres of land in a matter of minutes. Stop being so stupid and assuming everyone had the knowledge and ability to evacuate quickly. The authorities and state have totally fricked this entire crisis up.

This is why I'd rather a flood zone than a fire zone.

Get above the flood or in a boat and your OK.

Get in a fire and your fricked.

Wildfires can start anywhere there are trees and grass though.

I know a family that lost everything in the Bastrop TX wildfires. They moved to my BR subdivision in 2012 and got flooded- lost everything again.

They just announced the death toll has risen by 3 up to 7 now, which is obviously worrisome.

It sucks, you want to root for it not to be this guy's family. But regardless, it's someone's family.

Yeah I saw the one from earlier but I think they just announced the three more within the last hour or so

The details of those 3 don't seem good for this guy...

That's awful, and given the publicity of this story, it is plausible authorities went there immediately to check.

As you said, hopefully it isn't his family, but it is someone's family nonetheless.

I would also think that given the resort nature of the area and the seclusion of many cabins most people didn't even know what the fire was doing or have any way to receive emergency information. Also the steep drop offs could block your view of the actual flames and smelling smoke was probably nothing new due to the fires burning many miles away for the last several days.

It doesn't sound good for his family at all. I cant understand why he did not get the hell out WITH his family. Why go drive and see where the fire is? Rule #1 in evacuation/disasters etc is to stay together (and of course, get the hell out).

I feel bad for him because likely his wife and children are dead . But I am also upset with him for putting them in a situation in an evacuation zone with a fire on the loose with NO vehicle to use to escape.

Those poor little girls and his wife. What an unbelievable horror that could have been prevented if he had just evacuated with them instead.

ETA: I'm not meaning this to sound mean. Its just the loss of kids in such a preventable and horrible way gets to me.

You're probably right, but I imagine most people just aren't well equipped to think these things through on the fly.

In plenty of situations, keeping people sheltered while one or two people try to assess the situation/seek help makes sense. With a wildfire, and with one vehicle, it doesn't. I'm going to guess they didn't really think through the unique characteristics of this type of disaster (the lessened utility of shelter, greater need for flight) here.
