quote:

Reed said he was separated from his wife and daughters after he and his son — 15-year-old Nicholas — drove away from their home to see if the fire was approaching. By the time they tried to turn around, it was too late — the pair were stuck in traffic and later blocked by authorities.
quote:

“When we finally made our way back into Gatlinburg to try to get to her, all of Wiley Oakley was gone,” said Reed, referring to his street. “It was completely on fire.”
quote:

Reed feared it would take nothing less to return his family after fast-moving fires Monday evening tore through his neighborhood just outside the mountainous resort town of Gatlinburg, Tenn., separating the heartbroken father from those he cares about most. A torturous night had passed and still, Reed told ABC affiliate WATE, there was no sign of his wife, Constance, or the couple’s two daughters — 9-year-old Lily and 12-year-old Chloe. Reed told the station that he was “just hoping for a miracle.”
quote:

Reed said he had last spoken to his wife at 8:15 p.m. Monday and she told him she could see flames across the street from the family’s home and she didn’t know what to do. “I told her to call 911 and get out, and that was the last time I talked to her,” Reed told WATE.
quote:

He told WATE that his home was engulfed in flames, but he believes he saw signs that his family had escaped.

Reed told the Knoxville News Sentinel that he and his son were eventually evacuated to LeConte Center in Pigeon Forge.

“We were told that they would be busing people here, and I have been here since last night waiting,” he told the paper.

I couldn't imagine being in his situation.

Did they need to drive away to find out? There was a mandatory evacuation.

I feel for the guy, but that was a serious mistake.

Not sure, was the evacuation in effect at that point?

In some of the videos people are talking about how they really couldn't tell how much danger they were in up to the point they left, and that the news coverage wasn't really helping.

So while I think it probably would have made sense to put everyone in the car, I can see a situation where the dad and son are trying to gauge the situation around them in lieu of any good reports from media and law enforcement.

I read about that this morning. Can't imagine what I would be doing. No way I could just sit and wait.

If I were separated from my family in this situation, no authority would block me from going back to them. They would have to shoot me.

I feel terrible for the guy. I wonder what this means:

This is a major flaw showing now in the disaster planning that should have been done before this fire. At the 11:30 press conference there still is not a command center in place to handle people looking for loved ones. They need to really upgrade their preparedness because this could have been a huge tornado not a 100 year wildfire

same here... i dont know if this is going to have a happy ending unfortunatly. the evacuees are not that spread out like they were in a Katrina situation. Most everyone is in a couple locations right outside of town.

if they were alive i think they most likely would have found them by now

Such a horrible situation but "authorities" would have to gun me down before I just turned around and left my wife and daughter.

i dont think that's accurate. from all accounts i've heard, the evacuation orders were being communicated to residents up until the very last minute and whiley oakley is WAY up in the mountain. not anywhere near the main drag/center of gatlinburg, etc

I feel for the guy and agree with everyone in this thread, but I've come to learn that when there is a mandatory evacuation and you have family involved there is no reason to mess around. Get out and deal with it later. Why would you go see where it is? If that's even a possibility, just leave.

ETA: There's only been 3 deaths reported so far right? I'm assuming they are planning on finding a lot more once the burned down homes and buildings can be searched?

In interviews yesterday they said that he and his son took their only vehicle. His wife called him and said that the fire was across the street from their house. He told her to hang up and call 911 and he would head straight back. That's the last time he heard from her or their daughters.

Go frick yourself a-hole.

My friends are in the hospital bc the fricking idiots issuing evacuations didn't let anyone know until it was too late. Three brothers and now their parents are missing. All in a cabin on a thanksgiving vacation. Not from the area.
