Leave me the frick alone and let me do my work, that's all I ask.

My most recent bosses have done an awesome job of that, it helps that they are 300 miles away.

Lead from the front.
Don't ask for anything you haven't done or aren't willing to do.
Keep your door open....the actual door.

This among other things will help cover for your problem with the a-hole and all.

You have to answer only to yourself if you are an arse or not. If you are you gotta fake it.

Being approachable does not just mean saying " door is always open" that's code sometimes or managerspeak.

From my own experience with many bosses, do not answer questions with criticism or with more questions. The boss I have now is the embodiement of useless. Be a resource to employees.

ok i am about to give you the best advice i can ...

the one thing that is the most important thing to know is that everyone who works for you wants to feel needed and reassured that they feel good about the job they are doing ....

at the same time they must respect you and know that you are a take no bullshite , dead serious about your job kind of boss ....

its a fine line between being a boss and being one of the guys , but if you can perfect that you have it made ....

and remember always lead by example .....

Look up the Peter principle. Just because someone is in charge doesn't necessarily mean they should be

Listen.

I've worked for two men now that might ask you a question, but don't actually care about or listen to your answer. When you explain something to them, they don't grasp the actual point and interpret it differently.

Nothing worse than when you are six months on the job and your boss and his boss come to you with questions about THEIR jobs.

I always help and try to be nice, but my thoughts are usually focused on who they pleasured to get to that position.

You do come across like that in your posts on here
do I really come across like that? Even on an online forum?

To others: I try to have an "open door" policy with my guys. The employee in question has been with me for 13 years. I think some of this comes from him seeing the end of his productivity and ability to keep doing this same job. I understand that.

At a 20 group meeting we took a test. I believe it was something along the lines of "hat kind of boss am I?" I scored a-hole. As in, the guys administering the test had never seen my type of score before. I took this information and immediately went back to work to try and dissolve this "inner a-hole" that I had going for me.

I called all the employees into my office one at a time and gave them a solid half hour to "let me have it". I took notes of what they said and tried to develope my new approach to the way I handled and ran things. Two years later, I find out that I am still unapproachable.

Fear* can motivate, at least temporarily.

That's not my M.O. though, I hire and promote responsible people who can get along with others, give them the tools they need to succeed and get out of their way (for the most part).

*Payton got a big check and is considered one of the elite NFL Coaches. His way can and does work. So did Bill Walsh's.

Maybe he is wrong and you are approachable and he just needs to be more assertive.

He sounds like a sandy vagaina.
