In a perfect world tobacco would be widely available, but govt wouldn't subsidize healthcare, so feel free to smoke yourself to death because you're the only one paying for the health effects

Ah yes, the slippery slope of government. Once you introduce it, it takes over everything and you lose all liberties.

Ok.

Weird response to my pointing out that your interpretation of a pretty straightforward post was incorrect, but whatever.

We say that, but heck, the government here unilaterally moved tobacco age from 18 to 21 and nobody really said a word.

Because people aged 18-21 don't show up to the polls. The people that do pay attention and vote were unimpacted.

Reminds me of my favorite dialogue from the movie "Ides of March" when they're discussing policy and campaign speeches:

quote:

GOV. MORRIS (CONT'D)
Yeah I said it all here, "It's going to help people get an education...it's going to create national unity...it's going to teach young people a trade...and it's going to help get people out of debt from college loans. Tell me where that fails.

STEPHEN
All of that is exactly right...Governor if you're going to do it...then do it. Don't make it voluntary...mandatory.

GOV. MORRIS
That'll poll well.

STEPHEN
Mandatory!...everyone who graduates high school or turns eighteen, gives two years to his or her country. Military...peace corps...plant fricking trees, I don't care...and for that...their college education is paid for...period.

GOV. MORRIS
We do all of that now, with this...

STEPHEN
No sir you don't...do it all...all the way. Mandatory.

....

STEPHEN
And here's the beauty of it...everyone who is older than eighteen and past the age of eligibility, would be for it...create national pride...give all the kids an education.

GOV. MORRIS
And all the others?

STEPHEN
Can't vote. Too young.

This sits with them. Some start to smile.

STEPHEN (CONT'D)
You can't lose.

This is why I think legislation making driving tests much more comprehensive and difficult to pass for 16 year olds would pass. Makes roads safer, makes kids safer, eventually drives down insurance rates, etc. And the people who would be the most pissed off are too young to vote.

If they were truly worried about the ridiculous cost, they should pass out filter less cigarettes to everyone at age 50.

So your streets can be filled w immigrants, you can watch your generations old customs be evaporated, but you can’t smoke.

Wait till fish and chips are outlawed.

a pretty straightforward post:
quote:

UK parliament one step closer to passing landmark smoking ban
quote:

They have to save us from ourselves. We are helpless without them.

So now "they" and "them" are to refer to our government and not just the UK? That's supposed to be "straightforward"? That's just not a leap I'm willing to make. That doesn't make me "wrong", just unwilling to fall for the catastrophe syndrome.

"OMG, some other government in the world is not willing to protect the rights of its people! We're next!!1!"

Cigarettes aren't a loaded gun. In most cases, it isn't a quick death. It leads to a large variety of expensive health conditions with expensive treatments and takes years, even decades, to kill you slowly.

Well the Tories are about to get destroyed in the next election. Unfortunately Labour will probably be worse.

Im on board with banning cigarettes.

Do it to alcohol and I’ll riot.
Alcohol, tobacco/nicotine and marijuana/THC should all be legal, and I only use alcohol.

When has a ban ever done that? Some of you need to pick up a history book for once in your lives.

Ahh the old control through compassion.

First comes the universal health care because it's a "right"

Then maybe we tell you, you can't smoke. It's so bad for you and we know better.

Then those pesky cows and all that heart disease it causes and all of the greenhouse gases they release- we really need to reduce the meat consumption so that we can reduce our healthcare cost.

Then somehow a food shortage has happened and folks get really unhappy and take to the streets. But it's not our fault, it's those greedy farmers who simply will not share their fair amount.

But that's ok, we at the government are always fair so we'll seize a few of the farms that way we all can eat and no one goes hungry.

For some reason that's not working super well but it can't be our fault, maybe farmers are just so much more greedy than we originally thought. So we'll take over food production to make sure no one goes hungry and no one is eating or smoking or drinking anything that could raise our healthcare cost to high.

Why are all these people so mad at us and protesting don't the know we're helping? Maybe it's time to just put a few restrictions on these misinformers who dissent.

It's totally not communism at all, it's different because the name is different and we're just taking control of your decisions because we care about you and your health like SOOO much....

Totally agree. People have to bear the brunt of their bad decisions. The government “safety net” has shielded idiots from the real world repercussions of their lives.

Poor diet kills far more people than tobacco.

You good with the UK government rolling in and banning sugar, fast food and processed oils?

I’m not good with banning anything, but cigarettes are a vice with no real purpose.

Comparing them to food, even shitty food, is silly.

And food is already heavily regulated and restricted.

Kinda funny, because all of the former British Colonies or under British control for any period of time (except America), seem to smoke more than anyone on earth.

Egypt, Hong Kong, etc smoke like fricking chimneys

Let's review things for you since you seem to be confused.

* Tax-payers foot the bill for a lot of people's healthcare caused by their poor decisions.
* Smoking causes long-term severe health conditions.
* long-term severe health conditions cost a lot of money.
* No more smoking means there are less long-term severe health conditions caused by said smoking.
* Less long-term severe health conditions means less money having to be spent.

I hope this helps. You need to pick up a book for once in your life. Any book. Pick one. Preferably one with more words than pictures.
