The British government's plan for a landmark smoking ban that aims to stop young people from ever smoking cleared its first hurdle in Parliament on Tuesday despite vocal opposition from within Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party.

Under the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, children turning 15 this year or younger will never be legally sold tobacco. Once implemented — officials are aiming for 2027 — the legal age of sale that people in England can buy cigarettes will be raised by one year, every year until it is eventually illegal for the whole population.

People will bitch about "muh freedom" but when the gov't pays for your healthcare I think they can have a say on eliminating things that are adverse to people's health.

In a perfect world tobacco would be widely available, but govt wouldn't subsidize healthcare, so feel free to smoke yourself to death because you're the only one paying for the health effects.

So the same government flooding their country with illegals immigrants which is causing a massive spike in their rape and murders is now restricting the rights of their citizens?

We would all just be so helpless snd lost if they didn't tell us how to live our lives snd exactly what we can and can't do.

Socialized medical care requires this. Can’t have the added cost of tobacco ailments.

What nobody is looking at is the extended longevity that will be a result. They’ll be providing care for people who would have died 20 or 30 years earlier, as they get into their frail years. $$$

The government that foots the bill for its citizens healthcare is mitigating the ridiculous cost of care for tobacco-related conditions.

more government always leads to more government.

It aggravates the f*ck out of me that my tax dollars are subsidizing other people's poor choices.

Bingo. The real threat to the NHS is old people. And they deal with that by just denying care to them. It is a really fricked up situation over there. Of course it’s great if you’re in your 20s or 30s and need to visit the doctor for something minor.

The people in England no longer have any freedom.

Where does this all end? Beer, burgers, candy, meat, etc. are all supposedly unhealthy for you also. Once a tyrannical government starts taking freedoms, it will never stop until it is destroyed.

We are currently heading that direction as well, they are just further along the path.

In the US, there would be videos of people getting tazed over not putting the cigarette out when asked

That and somehow, someway it would be called racist

In no way will this create a black market for such products.

I'm small government AF but this ban would help lower that.

I'll be right there with you. Unfortunately, Molotov cocktails won't be in the arsenal. Can't afford to waste the alcohol.

yeah but it'd also set a precedent for banning more sh*t. What's next? Burgers? Beer? Pasta?

I know that cats pretty much out of the bag already. I do get the point about if other people are paying for your healthcare then they kind of deserve a say in what you're doing to your body.

In 2024 you know the possible consequences if you smoke. I have no issue if someone wants to smoke, but I’m wondering how is it even legal to sell such a product .
///

Cigarettes release thousands of different chemicals when they burn, including carbon monoxide, lead, and ammonia.

Many components of tobacco are poisonous, and up to 70 cause cancer.
Smoking is also linked to other serious illnesses, including lung disease, heart disease and strokes.

Should govt pay for a knee replacement for a person who spent decades running on pavement? We’ve known for a long time this is bad on the joints.

Should govt fund kidney replacement for someone who refused to make lifestyle choices to get their BP under control?

I travel to the UK for work quite a bit. They are surprisingly Socialist and you would be shocked at how conditioned their Citizens have become. They say things like "oh we aren't allowed to do that here" and "they don't let us do that" when referring to the Government and freedoms we take for granted. Their unquestioning willingness to quietly just line up (queue up) is an indicator. I often say that if you stand still for a minute people will line up behind you.
