We never smoked until I was 51, husband 50, kids 27,22,19.

I turned it all in after first day of ski school. Hated that crap on my face and just didn’t like any of it. Everyone else did great and loved it .. until ..

Husband tore his acl and mcl on the last day and the second child severely twisted his knee.

Jesus Christ!! I knew smoking was dangerous, but torn ligaments and twisted knees? Why isn't this on the surgeon general warning label?

Just got back. I hate it. Not just the skiing but the whole deal. Not my cup of tea.

I learned how to water ski very quickly. Found water skiing to be amazingly boring.

I absolutely love it. Ski for a couple of hours in the morning. Lunch with a few beers by a fireplace. Ski a couple of hours in the afternoon. Apres ski at a packed bar with your boys listening to some shitty cover band. Hit the hot tub after. So fun.

I learned to ski when I was 18. It was also the first time that I had ever seen snow. My friends took me to a black diamond run on my first day. I also went off of a 15ft cliff jump...wiped out, but the whole day was pretty fun. My friends were mean.

Snowboarding is also more dangerous the instructors say, more prone to head injuries. As they say, stick with one or the other. Hard to do both.

I started in my 30s and can do blues, I don’t touch anything harder than the blues. Aspen mountain? Forget it.

All true. Well, skiing is easier to pick up the basics anyway. A reasonably athletic person can do it in a day. Getting really good though takes a long time.

Snowboarding complete opposite. You have to progress and practice ALOT to get the basics and will assuredly have bumps and bruises along the way. Once it clicks though, you can advance quickly.

Tried skiing today for the first time
Tried about six runs, fell 72 times. I’ll never go again. Beers in the lodge is as close as I’ll ever get.

I feel like you and I would be friends.

I love skiing. Pretty much love any vacations that involves being active..to me, relaxing is not relaxing. I relax while climbing a mountain, on a run, playing golf, skiing, exploring, etc.

We got to the beach, setup our spot and I sit down and open a beer and 45 seconds later I am looking for something to do.

Definitely anxiety driven but being able to just slowly move down a slope, even if it's the same exact run time after time, is quite enjoyable to me.

Plus, we love vacations where we can meet new people from around the world. We encourage our daughter to make friends in ski school and on the slopes. We like meeting new people as well and learning about where they are from, what travels they like, getting new ideas, etc.

Being isolated and just sitting down not doing anything is more torture to me than anything else.

I don’t guess I’ve ever consciously tried to lean forward more. Any body got more tips?

Look up the YouTube channel “stomp it tutorials” - have been a big help for me, just knowing what you are trying to work towards and have a visual on what good skiing should look like.

As for tips:
-already noted, but lean forward, you should be leaning your shins into the front of your boots. You need the front of your skis to “hook up” with the snow to make turns
-keep your upper body upright (not leaning), and facing down the hill (not the direction you are turning
-turns are all about edge angle
1. Start by flexing your ankles at the beginning of turn, then your knees, then back out in reverse order as you complete the turn. This creates a smooth increase in edge angle into the middle of your turn, then a smooth decrease as your turn concludes.
2. Outside and inside ski (or uphill and downhill ski) in a turn need to have the same edge angle. Otherwise your skis turn on a different radius and that’s gonna make you unstable or fall
3. The more pressure you can put on the outside ski, the better. Use that metal edge to dig into your turns and power through icy spots, etc

I’ve skied probably 5 times in my 30 years on this earth, the biggest thing I learned last time was learning how to fall. I had a buddy who gave my private lessons and I very quickly figured out that if you’re gonna fall it is best to just lean back and fall with your back into the snow. It’s when you fall to the front over your skis that you can get yourself in trouble.

My first day with my buddy was just learning how to turn and fall with grace but by day 2 I was really starting to get the hang of it. I’m hoping to get back out west this year to practice some more and hopefully move up to blues. No shame in taking it easy that’s for sure.

Skiing is one of the most exhilarating things normal people can do. You’re missing out if you aren’t doing it

well you havent done shite but drink beer and sit in the lodge for last 20 years...wtf di you expect?

i always laugh at these threads....yea skiing isnt easy(snowboarding way harder apparently) but why would you think not working out and not doing any type of athletic movement for the last 20 years was suddenly going to allow you go do a really athletic event and be good at it after 6 tries??

talk about delusion
