I've raced and haven't fallen once in 35 years. A lot of you just suck at skiing. It's not that hard.

I think you should go for it.

They are 100% correct about private coach it really helps, it also takes a few times, and if you are uncomfortable etc, screw it. I hate it because I love the mountains and the clean dry air. It makes me feel 10 years younger.

Also, skiing on ice is bullshite, so go in am for sure and some places are much much better for beginners. Aspen is not one of those places.

Seriously my favorite part of the whole trip was the snow mobile ride, it’s just a damn ATV basically

How? I went skiing for the first time about a year ago and fell maybe 3 times and 2 of those were when I decided to move up to blues at the end of the day. It wasn’t very hard. Then again, I played hockey when I was younger so maybe an ice skating background helped out a lot

That's how it works. End of Day 2 or start of Day 3 is when it clicked for me and it's been great ever since. The problem people have with skiing is not pushing themselves to get it on real slopes. It's just like riding a bike.

The second day is when it all comes together. Give it one more day.

I can tell you didn't take lessons first. Lessons are mandatory. First thing you learn is how to stop.

Its like riding a bike, once it clicks and you can stay upright and control your speed, it gets fun. One of those things that's worth investing in a full day of lessons on day 1 the first time you go.

I learned to downhill at a young age, but in my mid 30s when my wife (no pics) and I were dating, she took me cross country skiing in WI for the first time and I hated it. Completely different ballgame, more like a workout without the fun of going fast.

If that were prerequisite, I would be skier today.

OP, I am with you on skiing.

Not sure what the disconnect was, but I just couldn’t do it.

I was like this when my dad tried to teach me to drive stick.

I eventually snuck the car out and learned it on my own easily.

Disconnect is sometimes the teacher making shite sound more complicated than it actually is.

I'm right there with you 40 when I went skiing the first time and realized I should just snowboard... Because I'm walking regardless and skiboots suck to walk in. I went in March though and whistler was icy. I want to t try 1 time in powder but ... With the overall expense now... Not sure if worth it

Skiing is easy. Snowboarding on the other hand is something that you have to commit time to.

The basics of skiing are easy yes. Advanced skiing is tough as hell. I have skied my whole life and am now “sunsetting” to skiing blues and greens. The difficult blacks are too much work and bumps have done as much damage to my knees as jumping out of perfectly good airplanes.

Snowboarding however is the opposite - the basics are tougher but you can advance faster (not at my age though). If you skateboarded at all you get the basics of boarding.

Try with a private lesson with either one or two students and an instructor. They will have you skiing greens and comfortable getting on and off the lift in the hour.

How fat/unathletic a baw are you?

Yeah you fall but you keep getting up and your athleticism takes over in the first couple days and you “get it”

This wasn’t true in my case. I just couldn’t get it. It was amazingly frustrating. I’ll stick to hiking or trail running during the summer. Less expensive and less people anyway.

Man, I’ve been skiing the last few days and watching the morons skip the easy greens and go straight to blues & blacks is equally frustrating and entertaining.

As I’m riding the chair up, these assholes have ski tips directly down run and have no control whatsoever. Yard sales left and right.

Whenever I go to help these idiots collect their gear I make sure to give them a shower of snow as I stop.

If you fall more than twice on a run, you’re not ready for it. Find something easier and learn to control yourself.

Take lessons first

Have low expectations the first trip

Know that it will take 3-4 trips before you really get it (to feel good on any green and try an easy blue with confidence)

…Then enjoy a lifetime of the best recreational sport on the planet
