Did you move your exhaust to vent out the side?

3rd gens like CAD's have the exhaust routed out the side behind the passenger rear tire. You are definitely right about straight back exhaust being a design flaw one the newer ones though.

PROS - rather be driving this with all **FIVE** windows *AND* the sunroof open than a convertible. - its a stick (fun as hell) - 4WD and at 340k miles, i've only really changed the oil and timing belts every 100k. - no car note - best looking 4runner body style ever - easiest toyota 'tinkertoy' ever..so many people own the 3rd gen you can find info on virtually ANYTHING you want to do to it. - simple interior - no fancy computer shite. i like my 4runner like i like my washer & dryer..old school and easy to work on. - its a toyota and the guys on top gear couldnt break it even by blowing up a building underneath it. cons - no pickup bed (trailer hitch hauler works well though) - they don't make the 3rd gen anymore

Posted this in another thread a few weeks ago, but I've changed out a front and rear taillight. The grand total of tools required for these jobs were:

1 - Phillips Head Screwdriver

The parts were $38 online (rear headlight assembly) and $9 for two front headlights at Wal-Mart.

They made these cars incredibly easy to maintain and service beyond simple stuff like oil changes. Love my 4Runners.

Love the 80's 4 Runners

I would seriously consider keeping the '15 TRD PRO for a everyday driver and buying an early hen 4Runner or an even older Land Cruiser (i.e. FJ40) to have as a tinkering and beat the hell out of vehicle.

The highlander is a crossover on a car frame while the 4Runner is a true SUV on a truck frame. You cannot really compare the two.

I burned up a a tent because of this. Literally, my only complaint with the vehicle. A $50 modification routing it out the side made it the perfect SUV, tho.

Yeah, I'll be taking mine to a muffler shop soon to have it re-routed.

Is the muffler behind the axle? If not, I'd just get a turn down and not even bother with a tip.

they won't change it

They are changing, pretty significantly it seems. Model is due August/Sept. We were about to buy one and decided to wait on new ones - they might look and drive better; and if not, the 2015 will be a little cheaper...

I had Midas take off the Catalytic converter, it was slightly louder, but not noticeable. I suppose a turn down would work, i just ran it out the side....looks good too

Got a pic? I just looked up aftermarket kits, and they all seem to use the factory location.

130k on an 06

Understated pros:
-I have the removable 3rd row fold to the side seats which get some hate. While impractical for larger adults, they are perfect for kids or short trips such as hauling drunken miniature adults home from the bar buckled.

-I've had strange women become so attracted to the manliness of mine that they attempted to perform unnatural acts for it in public places.

-set it on cruise at 65-70 and you will get 22-24 mpg hwy. not awesome but better than its competitors (xterra, pathfinder, pre-pussification explorers)

Cons:
-It doesn't pull bay boats that well. Stated tow capacity, while doable, comes at the expense of a very jerky ride.

-it lacks the feature many newer vehicles have which blows cold air through the seat cushion to cool your balls in the summer.

My wife (no pics) has a 2015 SR5 premium. Can I get a cliffs notes on whatever exhaust issue you guys are talking about (if it applies to the new ones)?

Basically if you have all the windows down, including the rear hatch, the exhaust fumes can make their way into the cabin.

Toyota 4Runner - Pros/Cons
Anything?

I've had four .... all of them outstanding. Put over 200,000 miles on each of them and then passed them down to the kids.

Cons

A small interior, really tight bigger people.
They can have (automatic) rear latch issues.

Pros

Resale value
Reliability
Durability

I finally let my wife have a Sequoia in 2009 - a larger version of a 4Runner, we liked it a lot. We recently traded it on a Landcruiser.

I've actually still got a 2004 4Runner that we keep for when our Son is home from school or when the girls come to visit so they'll have something to drive while here. We're going to let our Son take it back to school with him this fall.

4Runners are great though, as long as you are not over 6' tall although I have heard the 2015s have more head room, finally.
