I just encountered a couple of women in a coffee shop, one of whom had a baby I would estimate at just over 1 year of age that was wearing a soft hockey style helmet.

We exchanged pleasant greetings and the toddler had a nice playful reaction to me. I asked why the helmet. They said because the toddler was learning to walk and would sometimes fall down, bemused that I did not know this custom. So she wears that helmet all the time? I asked. When she’s active, yes, they replied. It’s a safety issue, they followed up. They then looked at me as if I was a savage baboon.

Are helmets for toddlers a thing now?

I thought they wore the helmets b/c their skull was deformed and while they were young you could "mold" it back to normal?

Only for over-reacting facebook moms who are afraid of CTE. These are the kids who grow up with no idea of how to survive in the world because they will have been so insulated from its realities.

Apparently they are for helicopter parents.

I've only ever seen helmets for kids with misshapen heads.

The main kids I can think of who has to wear helmets were epileptics in case they randomly had a seizure and fell.

You're an idiot. It's more than likely due to plagiocephaly or another cranial issue and she didn't want to make you look like a moron.

I thought they were for skull forming. Though I wouldn't fault a parent for being safe.

Yes, when one couple does something then it's a trend.

The only thing I know kids wear soft helmets for is epilepsy.

Keep those noggins safe from abrupt falls.

Yes, that’s a thing.

But that wasn’t the case here.

I've definitely heard of them being used to help shape the skull as it grows when they come out a little lopsided.

Wearing just as protection because they sometimes fall... that's a bit over the top.

No, I’m aware of this.

This was not the case.

You assume too much and are overly confident in your own false sense of intellectual superiority.

Carry on wise one.

You're the one making an assumption off small talk with a stranger in a coffee shop...

It wasn’t an assumption.

Once again, you assume too much.

Kids who have autism or kids who hit their heads against the floor or walls when they get angry are made to wear helmets all the time.

There are a variety of cranial issues that would require a child at that age to wear a helmet. Because she broadly noted it was a safety issue, you assumed this to be an over-protective mother vs. a physician recommended or ordered device.

You sure it wasn't a torticollis helmet and she just wasn't trolling you?
