I donated to a Southern Baptist site. Hopefully churches are more honest than "business" type charities.

this Church LINK / is the local Church where I have been working past 4 days. This was a wholly private effort at establishing a place for those in need.
Hundreds of volunteers along with Texas State guard and volunteer nurses from Cy Fair ISD/Local Hospitals and a Vet did EVERYTHING
the Red Cross only showed up today with 3 people and coloring books.

These folks were fed by local restaurants , cared for by local medical personnel.Clothing, shoes, everything . Medicine you name it we, it was done

All for the right reasons

I'm very happy to hear that. I saw your post in another thread and was just wishing and hoping yall were ok. I'll never forget how you helped out my family in their time of need last year. God Bless your generous heart and giving spirit.

[quoteThe only sure thing is to donate your time helping gut houses etc... It seems like giving money to any charity is shady nowadays.

I absolutely agree. I'm not giving money to someone to give money to someone else. That absolutely batshit insane.

The best way to do it is to find someone taking supplies over and give it to them. It's not hard to find a group on the MS Gulf Coast to donate to. I'm sure Louisiana is the same way

Not the easiest for those that live in other states not close by.

What is so frustrating is how much the Red Cross monopolizes the tv now. Many of the tv shows I'm watching now has a little banner at the bottom talking about how they have partnered with the Red Cross and to donate. So for those not aware of the issues with Red Cross will just blindly donate to them thinking all of their money is going to Hurricane Harvey victims.

I wish there was some type of check and balance because there seems to be so many people who donate. The money flows in, but after the cameras leave and the world moves on, I do not ever hear of people receiving money to help them get back on their feet. There needs to be away to trace this money. Because there is nothing worse than people who would take money that people gave in order to support people who are in much need.

Do you have a back up wheelie, just in case? Is it common to have one?

I think you donAte through Walmart the donations will get to the right people

I shopped at Albertson's tonight and at checkout they had an option to donate to Harvey Victims with suggested giving amounts. It doesn't actually tell you how the money will be spent, and I suspect that Albertson's would give these donations to whomever they see fit and take all the credit for it.

After the flood last year I will never donate to Red Cross again. I also didn't donate any money except to buy things my flooded family members needed. My husband and my grown kids all pitched in many hours of manual labor to help my family and our friends.

My parents, my sister, my brother, my nephew, my best friend and her dad all flooded. None of them got a meal or a dime from the Red Cross.

The Church International in St. Amant had the best setup for picking up free hot meals and some cleaning supplies. The Catholic church helped my family also. They are lifelong parishioners.

Almost everyday during clean up, someone would drive up and offer us food and supplies. Most were just individuals and groups from churches coming from non flooded surrounding areas. I would cry every time this happened. It was just amazing and so nice not to have to stop to round up food and supplies.

The Ascension Parish population just pitched in and helped each other.

For this flood I will be donating to Catholic Charities and The Church International. I will also donate to families directly and maybe drop off items being requested here on the coast to be sent to Texas. My husband is heading to Texas Monday with a group to cook.

My son and daughter-in-law live in Houston and I'm so grateful that they didn't flood and have been able to help others.

I have a fella that works for me whose daughter's home flooded. I gave cash and a Home Depot gift card for him to give directly to her. I chose a group of close friends and asked them to donate directly to this family. So far we have raised almost $6000.00.

If you know someone who was affected or know someone that knows someone; I recommend this route - it eliminates the middle man.

ETA: they had no flood insurance so sadly; this $6000 is probably a drop in the bucket.

When you have a flooded house and no flood insurance I can tell you every dollar or gift card is appreciated. There was a church and some friends that donated a substantial amount when we flooded last year. I have never been more thankful or humbled during that time.

Same here. I have a hard time understanding why a "charity" entity calls soliciting a donation from me but yet the people doing the begging, so to say, are getting paid. Ask them if they get paid. 99% of them will say yes. They want me to exhibit a "goodness of the heart" moment but yet they don't practice what they preach.

Not once have I ever encountered a church solicitation where the person doing the asking is getting paid to do it.

I too am skeptical of giving to charities. I like to know that any money that I give goes directly to the people that need it. My company has offices in Houston so what we did was set up a payroll deduction for our employees to donate money that will go to a not for profit that we own that will distribute any money raised directly to employees that work for us. The owner of our company will match employee donations dollar for dollar up to $50K. We did the same thing last year and each one of our employees that were affected received nearly $1000 each. We are hoping to do better this year. This way we are taking care of our own.

As I said in earlier post I came out of the August flood lucky.
My Aunt offered to help replace my furniture, I asked if she would give whatever she was planning to do for me to a family friend who lost everything.
Even though they had flood insurance they needed that cash way more than I did.

I have also heard nothing but good things about Catholic charities, I have a friend on the MS Gulf Coast & they did a lot for the the people here.
