Thinking about the most effective ways to donate..

I am overwhelmed as a Harvey evacuee by the response of people from all corners of the world to help Houston and the Gulf coast recover from the storm and floods.
But something is just rattling in my mind about how these funds given by celebrities and Foundations actually get distributed. I hope for the best but am unsure most of the funds find there way into the needy hands of people who are truly suffering and without.
I'm very fortunate to be displaced but coming home to a fairly dry house with minimal damage. But I know many other family and friends (truly poor people) who have major needs.
I guess this is just a call. For people. With big hearts to find people in your network to directly give to if possible. So many needs. I'm proud of everyone on this board who is going above and beyond to help. There isn't enough room to type the names of people risking their lives to save others. Many others digging deep to give.
GOD BLESS THE GULF COAST and may all those who are in true need get the help they need.

Whatever you do, don't donate to Compassion Louisisana LLC

In other words, steer clear of the Red Cross.

I donated to a Southern Baptist site. Hopefully churches are more honest than "business" type charities.

Has anyone volunteered to ace your house yet?

I aced it before we left. Wife wouldn't let us leave the driveway otherwise.

Yep.
My church has filled up three 18 wheeler trailers so far. They are coordinating with churches in the Houston area as to where to deliver and such.
Don't forget about the folks down on the coast who got slammed on initial land fall. Take care of those peeps too folks.

Compassion LLC is doing big things in Texas, new TV's, new office furniture, baby diapers, you could be set

After Katrina, The Red Cross was very helpful to me and others giving out checks based on how many people in your family. No questions asked.

The only sure thing is to donate your time helping gut houses etc... It seems like giving money to any charity is shady nowadays.

I posted on my Facebook that I was thinking about and praying for the victims of Harvey.

If you didn't get 50 likes and 5 shares it doesn't count.

I donated yesterday to Samitan's Purse.

What does "ace" mean?? Remove what was needed??
And we donated clean up related items to a company owned by friends who flooded last year and they want to pay back.
Also donating a ton of stuff to go to Orange Texas ... friends have contact with a church there.
It feels so insignificant but it is something. Wish I could do more.

IMO the majority of it it doesn't
Nor does the billions the Feds set aside for the disaster
The flood last August showed a lot about charities & what they do.
Samaritans Purse was a blessing to so many while Red Cross was throwing away donations because they were not from "approved" vendors.
I 100% believe the best way to help is to reach out to someone locally & offer them help.
I was lucky last summer, I lost a lot of stuff but I had somewhere to go & was safe.
A friend from high school that I've seen once in 18 years & a man I know through work that I've met in person twice sent me gift cards to help with replacing items.
I cannot express how much that meant to me & I plan to pay it forward.
I am glad you & your family are safe & God Bless

Thank you. This is what I'm talking about. I don't care that Miley Cyrus gave 500k. That is like me giving 100 bucks. Big shite.

I don't donate to charities. I help people personally. Charities are a scam. Most of them, anyway.
