That's quite an assumption.

How many generations does one have to go back

Great question. I was wondering myself. Honestly, i think just having well off parents, who themselves worked for their fortune, already makes someone exhibit old money characteristics (at least when compared to new money).

True old money, however, would span back to plantation days.

I love how people talk about "new money" like it's a bad thing. The trashiest shitheads I know are old money. Or were before they pissed it away

New Money to me are people with more than the "30K millionare" but not enough to pay cash for the big items, so they still owe a shite ton on loans.

So basically anyone who is upper middle class is "new money"?

Friend of mine who ran a resort in Hawaii told me there are obvious differences between the rich and the wanna be rich. He signaled out successful attorneys as the wannabe's but it could be a lot of professions or entrepreneurs.

His experience and mine, dealing with these folks, is that the truly rich are nice, discreet, and in many cases unassuming. If someone is loud, obnoxious and has to show the world they have money, most likely the were until recently, poor.

One of the things that sparked this thread was when I was visiting my bro in California and we went to some wine tastings at a few vineyards. At one place, there was a group of people, mostly clad in expensive graphic tees, riding around the valley in a limo and being as obnoxious as can be in the tasting room. They also bought tons of bottles of wine (not so subtle hint at how much money they have). They kind of ruined the mood there. I think they were from Utah, oddly enough, but I guess new money can be from all places.

IMo new money people are better than old money. At least new money worked for it, old money were born with it.

Not mad at people who made something out of themselves and did well, they can do whatever the hell they want with their money

What if they just saved up enough money to take a trip they've been wanting to go on? And were living it up while on vacation? What if the limo was a DD for the group? What if they have a different style from you?

If these folks are new money, what are you? Weren't you all at the same wine tasting? Looks like they had fun, too bad you were too busy worrying about them being new money to have a good time.

I agree with this. I think you should've started a thread titled things that "$30k millionaires do". It would've been a lot more fun.

Not sure really, all I know is our family sold ours right after the civil war but kept all the land. They ended up building another house on the property but it's not standing anymore. Pretty sure I'm the 7th generation on our land

Depends. I've found young people who sacrificed lot to become wealthy are a hell of a lot more bearable than trust fund kids. With older people, its the opposite

You could flip this sentence around and 50% would agree with it.
Look at someone like Paris Hilton. Her family has been rich for at least 4 generations, and she is an obnoxious p.o.s.
Money, old or new, doesn't make the person.
