According to Wikipedia you're right. The post I made before was the way it was explained to me by my uncle, his son is a seal, and he was in the navy as well.
Well, FWIW, I'm sure all of those labels change over time.
I know more about intelligence agency and federal law enforcement special operations groups (which obviously are fed by military special operations a fair amount) than military special operations, and those names and labels change constantly. I'm pretty sure the same applies to military special operations outfits. I know Delta's official designation gets changed with some regularity, although with the growing attention to that community, it seems like they're less concerned about hiding the existence of these groups now.

Don't know any SEALs, although I'm tight with Bilzerian.
NO BIG DEAL
NO BIG DEAL

I know several most of whom are retired.
It's creepy when we are all hanging out and swimming when the active duty guys go underwater for like 5 minutes. Freaks me out.

I had never heard of DEVGRU when he joined that unit. I had heard of seal team 6. It was stated pretty matter of factly by someone that knows his shite that he was a notch above 6.
I know this, my cousin is a bad man, and has seen some hairy shite in the last 20+ years. He's retired now, and enjoying life. But he was on alert with a bag ready to go since before 9/11.

He tells me about some of his base duties, what his job is, how he's basically deployed at a minutes notice...But never anything specific. When I met him we had the what do you do conversation and he explained a little. Like I said though, he's pretty private... A hell of a lot of fun, but it's obvious he just doesn't want to talk about that aspect of his life. I guess he just doesn't like the attention.
My experience is that to a large extent, these guys are proud of what they do and what they've done to get there, so I think some of them do want to talk about it, they just don't want to answer the same questions we picked up from movies or video games for the 1000x time. Through my last job (not interesting at all) I was exposed to some of the more boring aspects of their jobs, and that gives us something to talk about that isn't so annoying and sensationalized.

Is that the dude that threw the naked chick off the roof into a pool?
Didn't he got through BUDS twice? Read somewhere he go washed back after finishing and then did not graduate because of a beef with his boss. Dude is badass in my book!

I'm skeptical of anyone claiming to know someone who is, or was, a member of Delta Force. I attended OCS with 15 guys who were Special Forces qualified. There were 2 of them that the other 13 did not know who they were, or what their assignments were. The speculation was that they were Delta Force, but they would not discuss the matter even with the other SF guys.
None of the SF guys were workout warriors. They all carried normal body fat, but were more than capable of maxing the PT test. They were not the gung-ho types that some of the Rangers and 82nd Airborne veterans were. They had a calmness about them in situations that were designed to be stressful that was reassuring to those of us who were experiencing them for the first time. They appeared amused by most of the chicken shite harassment designed to fluster the Officer Candidates.

so I think some of them do want to talk about it
The only way these guys open up about their service is when they are around their own peers and usually only with the guys that they actually served personally with. Opening up to anybody else is usually out of the question. I doubt most of these guys wives even know much about what they do.

When I was much younger I was in Lafayette Shooters with my brother. There was a skinny guy there that my brother knew. So, we went talkt to him and my brother told me he was a SEAL. I said to him, "You must be a mean SOB". His reply to me was, "Nope, I am a pretty cool guy but I can become your worst nightmare real quick." I was about 14 and thought that was the coolest shite ever.
Quite like average joe's believe a martial arts practitioner is always looking for a reason to fight. Putting the time in to learn and become disciplined makes them not eager to fight, but when the time is upon them, they know they will hold their own.

Yea that's him. And no, I don't actually know him. Just full of BS like 93.667% of this thread.

Depends on what you mean by open up. I've never had anyone other than very close friends tell me any operational information (and even then, we're talking very vague stuff), and I've never asked. But a little about Q course, training, weapons, gear, etc., has not been an issue.
I don't consider myself any type of confidant to the special operations guys I know well, at least with regard to their service. But in my experience, their wives know plenty about the ancillary details of what they're doing.
So if you're referring to the details of their deployments, I agree. But if you're talking about the basics about their status in special operations, that hasn't been my experience. I'm sure it is different for guys in Delta, DEVGRU, etc., but to my knowledge I've never encountered any of those guys.

I have two.
A friend I grew up with from the age of 10 is a SEAL. His team, I believe Team 10, is based out of Virginia Beach. He is from Mandeville and is known by many on this site and around SE Louisiana. He is active and has been on at least 3 deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan that I know of. I am not certain, but I think he recently went through sniper school as well, which has been described by the now famed Chris Kyle as the elite SEALS.
My second:
An uncle of mine claimed to be a SEAL the entire time we knew him. Well during a divorce from my aunt it was revealed that he was really just a cook after washing out of BUDs.

I'm serious. He kinda explained what it is. He's the real deal too. Recon guy. Most disciplined and physically fit person I've ever met. Also very intelligent. Could be bullshite but I never took him that type of guy.

From what I understand, they have to go through grueling training to get to be a SEAL after BUDS. You're an MMA guy you should know that there are fighters and then there are warriors. These guys are killers and warriors.
That means you are an extremely tough and mentally strong individual that is driven to succeed, which in its own right makes you a dangerous person. It has nothing to do with knowing how to box or fighting technique.

Wait a damn second! He goes through BUDs twice! How is he not badass? 85% cannot go through once...
Posted on 4/30/14 at 9:38 am to DirtyMikeandtheBoys
I know two guys from Mandeville that went to BUDS. One didn't make the cut, and another one got into some trouble for trying to beat up one of his instructors and was forced to quit
My mom's boss was a SEAL in Vietnam. Very soft spoken guy, and was shot in the leg, ending his time. Extremely successful now, and can instantly take over a conversation in a room with 100 people. I haven't seen anyone else do that in my life. When he talks, people STFU and listen.
