I raised two, as the primary income earner while my wife worked part time. We had decent cars, a decent house, the kids had decent clothes, we went on vacations, they participated in sports. We did not live in a city but a fairly long commute from my job in one. My wife worked part time at night at a non career type job so we didn’t need daycare. That’s where we sacrificed…I didn’t make huge money but just kinda average. The entire time I listened to people, at those sporting events etc, who earned more complain how they couldn’t get by without two incomes. This was because their cars were nicer, their homes bigger, and their vacations more frequent. For the most part, if two adults put their mind to it they can figure out how to afford children. Lots of govt help (not talking welfare, just things like child tax credits, deductions etc).

you don't understand how much better off you had it raising kids back then vs now cost wise. people today can't afford housing or vehicles with no kids but you somehow think you "sacrificed" something ok bud.

My youngest is a HS senior. It’s not like this is the ancient past. My wife and I were DINKs in the early 2000s. She was a bank manager, I was a junior network engineer. We made equal income and she quit her job. We moved to the boonies where schools weren’t dangerous and housing was cheaper. We definitely sacrificed.

If you have tried driving on an interstate over the last few years.. or going to literally any beach on literally any weekend- it should be painfully obvious that there are just too many damn people.. So i could give two fricks if somebody thinks it’s selfish or whatever- anything that reduces the overall population is a win in my book .

People overstate what this truly costs.

My $590/week (for 2) child care bill disagrees with you.

clothing them can easily be made very cheap.

agree.
hand-me downs, and used are the way to go.
Wife gets a ton from Poshmark and the 2nd hands childs store.
We get some nice new clothes on occassion but most of their school stuff either gets destroyed quickly or they grow out of it so buy cheap.

People simply don’t want to give up their 4 times a year vacations and new cars to have children. And that’s ok, but why act like you couldn’t cut back and afford it?

Kids are expensive, no getting around it.
Mine are still young and between child care and saving for college, it's brutal.
We are fortunate to be able to afford it but I don't know how some people make it.

And don't get me started on the parties...

sure they can. You dont need a giant 5 bed 3 bath house, you dont need 2 brand new cars, you dont need $5k vacations, you also could work a better job or more than 1 job to get ahead.

Cool, good for them. There's enough kids out there that have shitty home lives and want to steal my stuff.

Good. I've had to deal with too many parental leaves. Hope these punks stay kid less until I retire at least.

Like I don’t have expenses today? Got 1 in college, another about to head there in the fall. I pay all housing expenses for both. They both earned scholarships that cover tuition and they will work to pay their own food expenses. How can I do this? Wife went back to work full time at her career after childcare wasn’t a need (when oldest was 14. My salary improved.

People, then and now, have a defeatist mindset. They call people like me, who came from abject poverty as a child, advantaged. I used to buy groceries for my entire family once a month as a HS kid, because if I didn’t we wouldn’t have eaten that week. I worked 2 jobs at times while in school.

Spoken like someone who has no idea what the rental market is even like much less the housing market.

The irony of this discussion being about people to not have kids because they can't afford them and in the same breath you suggest work multiple jobs so they won't have time to spend with said kids is hilarious.

If you meet a lot of gen z women, you'll know that is probably a great thing they arent having kids.

They have no coping skills themselves.

Can’t speak for Gen Z but millennial women definitely still want kids/family but they’ve been sold a load of bullshite about careers and we are woman hear us roar junk. That’s why the whole “Trad” wife shite has exploded over the last 5 years.

Millennial women are getting older and are realizing a meaningless career at global mega corp isn’t fulfilling their biological desires.

3 years ago I would have agreed with you. But with the skyrocketing cost of living these days it seems that many are choosing between home ownership/vacations/(current) quality of life and having kids. I personally think it's shortsighted because the quality of life diminishes greatly as you get older without children and grandchildren but I can see their logic.
