I searched and didnt see anything:

Pretty freaking crazy

quote:

For years Donald Heathfield, Tracey Foley and their two children lived the American dream. Then an FBI raid revealed the truth: they were agents of Putin’s Russia. Their sons tell their story

quote:

If Tim and Alex’s story sounds eerily familiar to fans of The Americans, the television drama about a KGB couple living in the US with their two children, that’s because it’s partly based on them. The show is set in the 1980s, providing a cold war backdrop, but the 2010 spy round-up served as an inspiration. The show’s creator, Joe Weisberg, trained to be a CIA case officer in the early 1990s and, when I speak to him on the phone, tells me he always wanted to put family at the heart of the plot

Agreed. It's hard to imagine the kind of shock that would bring to a person, much less adolescents like the 2 mentioned in the story.

In this video embedded in the article one of the former spies says that a big threat to America's world dominance would be a Russia and Germany (or China) alliance. Is Germany really a potential alliance candidate with Russia? I thought they were a solid US ally -- like Barry O and Angela did the no-pants dance or something.

Also, was The Americans inspired by the spies being rounded up in 2010?

The quote in my OP stated that this roundup was the inspiration for the writer.

I actually am not as excited to watch episodes of the Americans after the first season and a half because it got too ridiculous. I much preferred the more "reality" based version at the very beginning that at least more closely resembled this story. There was some far fetched stuff, but it was somewhat believable.

I can easily see the situation in the article. Live your life and try to position yourself to gain some info here and there. Not lead a fake life as an American, then you marry some FBI secretary to lead a secondary double fake life, killing someone every episode with karate and all that shite.

This has been happening in this country since the Russian Revolution of 1917.
If any of you are familiar with author and commentator David Horowitz, his autobiography is about this. His parents were Communists who protested in the U.S. as early as the 1920s and during the war! He, himself was deep into it, and fomented the protest movements of the 1960s, until it all got too close and his friends started ending up dead.

Radical Son : a generational odyssey

I have a better chance of starting a sexual relationship with Jennifer Lawrence and getting the green light from my wife to do so than Germany & Russia forming an alliance.

This.
The German people and the Russian people have no love for each other, and don't trust each other as far as they can throw each other. Now, on an individual basis, there may be some detente, and concerning power politics it may happen. But it would be a VERY temporary and convenient alliance.

Awesome read.

And I can't help but feel for the kids. They seem like incredibly intelligent guys that have no home.
