After being hit by a drunk driver last year, I would like concrete barriers on every 2 lane divided highway to keep idiots from crossing the yellow dividing lines.

Don't drive a motorcyle. Problem solved.

It protects innocent people and children from drunk driving selfish assholes

I know two families that lost family members due to vehicles crossing over. They are absolutely necessary.

Tell that to the 2 families represented by the groups of crosses on I-10 near Highland.

The state would be smart to contract maintenance of the cables out to someone, but the state isn't smart. We'd rather hire 700 new state employees to do nothing about it

yeah, this. Whenever I do see one with slack, I think that was an accident that destroyed a car, had the barrier not been there it would have destroyed lives.

Those cable barriers have mostly eliminated high speed head on crossover collisions.

Not many people doing 70-80 when they hit grass, stop.

Those crossovers should have been used long ago.

I can vouch for this. Saw a group of Sunday motorcylists stopped on the side of I-10 east between Beaumont and Houston when we were coming back from an LSU game this past fall. One of their buddies had ran into the cable barriers and was on the ground with a sheet over his head. His friends were standing around clearly distraught. Just a sad situation.

I don't know if it's been said yet, but I'd imagine that even a "slack" cable system will arrest a vehicle and prevent it from going into oncoming traffic.

The kinetic energy required to rip out a few thousand feet of strung heavy cable - even without it being taut - is probably far more than you average road vehicle is capable of generating.

So, even the dilapidated barriers are still effective. At least that's be my guess; admittedly I haven't researched the topic and I'm just going on my experience, but that's what I'm going with until proven otherwise.

Motorcycles are dangerous. If you hit anything on a motorcycle at interstate speeds, you are most likely dying.

Cables save tons of lives.

Motor cycles account for only 1-2% of total vehicular miles driven on the road. Cables might be dangerous for them but they are lifesavers for the vast majority of vehicles.

As others have said, motorcycles are inherently dangerous at those speeds.

They cost a fortune to build and maintain. I don't know why trees were not used in many places. Better for the environment and cheaper. Less mowing too.

Maybe they didn't want to wait a decade for their natural barrier to become useful

I love them and the idea of them. But, they are not cheap to install and maintain. That is my biggest beef with them.

Trees are not flexible, so they'll kill whomever runs into them. The cable barriers are pretty awesome IMO.

Proof!

Then why not have the cables on both sides of the road?
