I didn’t read the article but I know that the DA in west Baton Rouge is paying cops $40/hour detail to write tickets.

Prob LACE program. Local Agency Compensation Enforcement. It's gotten some pretty bad press over the years but has been reworked to set hard limits on how much any participating officer/deputy/trooper can make in overtime pay thru LACE in a single pay period. Before that change it was a free for all with some troopers enhancing their salary by a third or more annually. Out of our pocket and into theirs. And I dare ya to not pay up. Lol

No way for the state to know how much money they make.

So how are they explaining the large amounts of cash being collected and spent? Unless it is going straight into certain pockets, it has to be accounted for in the budget.

If it is not, certain federal agencies would befall over them.

Wish I could remember the name. There's a town in North Louisiana where the speed limit dropped at the top of a river bridge. So I hit the brakes, no problem. Then I get to the bottom of the bridge and the speed limit drops another 10 mph and there's a cop sitting right behind the sign. Maximum fine.

Best part is that no one ever answered the courthouse phone number. After weeks of trying, some guy finally answered and I explained I was calling to see if I could reschedule my court date or take defensive driving. Dude says "I"m just here to sweep the floor" and hung up.

One solution: local governments should not be able to keep revenue generated by fines. If a community is interested in enforcing the law and making the community safe, then the fines collected should not matter.

Go visit some other states cities that have those cameras on the side of the road or corner.
Pay attention and notice how often those cameras are flashing...now that's a lot of tickets

is important to the town of 1,771 residents. Henderson reported raising $8,433 in property taxes and $190,386 in sales taxes

There is part of the problem. Five bucks per resident in property taxes (not factoring business property tax).

These small towns simply have no other source of income. Homestead exception needs to be looked at.

I also question the $190,000 in sales tax collections. There is a good bit of businesses located within the town limits including several truck stops.

They changed the state law a few years ago where you had to be over the limit by a certain amount or the city/parish didn't get to keep the revenue.

I think you have to be 10 or more over for them to keep it or it goes to the state's general fund.

I got a ticket in Walker. I was passing a truck in the left lane on the interstate and didn’t see the reduced speed limit.

If you are actually speeding, is it a speed trap?

Haven't seen any helicopter/airplane traps in a while. That always got me. State's strapped for funds but they found some extra doughlaying around to play around in aircraft. Im no economist, but I feel like a helo or plane orbiting for half a day or more is a little less cost effective than a cop car issuing the same amount of tickets in that given spot. Gotta have the car on the ground anyway to make the stops.
