Terrebonne Sheriff trying to use criminal statute to unmask online critic

This is pretty sketchy. A Houma police officer seems to be guy behind a blog that is exposing backroom dealings in Terrebonne parish.

Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s deputies raided a Houma Police Officer's house this week, under the theory that he was involved in an anonymous web site questioning the sheriff's public contracts.
Attorneys representing the police officer, as well as independent ethics and First Amendment attorneys, question the constitutionality of Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Jerry Larpenter’s effort to unmask someone for questioning his use of public money.
quote:
Some of the anonymous posts ask why Larpenter's wife works for an insurance agent named Tony Alford, whose agency bills the sheriff's office monthly. They also point out that Alford just lined up new insurance coverage for the parish government as well, without going through a public bid process and without an authorizing ordinance that the parish attorney has said is required.
Jerri Smitko, a lawyer who is helping Anderson, said the sheriff’s willingness to go after people who comment on his use of public money is “scary.”
quote:
Loyola Law Professor and ethics attorney Dane Ciolino says these and other contracts discussed on the ExposeDAT site raise questions under state ethics laws.
“Those contracts should be examined. And the notion that search warrants are issuing and the house of a media commentator is being searched for the content of speech posted on a public website is absolutely extraordinary,” Ciolino said. “It’s amazing we’re having this conversation in Louisiana rather than in Iran.”

If you have to ask yourself if law enforcement is doing something fricked up that is illegal, unethical and unconstitutional, it's a pretty good bet it is just that.

What an idiot.
Mail this stuff to the local paper and let them do the work.

Even if the guy posting this is an idiot or paranoid schizo or hell, a sovereign citizen, and it's all crazy talk-- the sheriff can't bust in him for this without a better case. Otherwise, yeah, there's probably fire.

Larpenter has been accused of doing sketchy shite for years. In fact he was investigated by the FBI over some shite but nothing has ever come of it

Makes your head swim just trying to figure out that "organizational" chart.
The whole bunch of them look crooked as hell. Looks like they will all be doing time soon.

I think that same chart applies to every parish in Louisiana

They may be crooked, but I for the life of me can't figure out what the hell that actually implies. Other than maybe the insurance thing with no bid. Otherwise, it just looks like small town business dealings. I mean Houma is only going to have so many rich people and they are going to go into business ventures together. And I think you take any group of people and put arrows like that, you can make them look "crooked".
But, there may definitely be something if the raided a guys house. That's sketchy.

Did the Sheriff actually believe that raiding this guys house would make things better? That alone tells you something.
That's his regular thing to say something totally opposite to the obvious. It's mildly amusing but I have never seen anyone take the bait like y'all just did.

There's nothing "legal" about anonymously criticizing a sheriff like a coward, this guy deserves his jail time.

This.
I don't think this chart and FB page really "exposes" anything.

If it didn't expose anything then why is the sheriff going through all of this to shut it down?
