I was going comment earlier on that as well. I don't think we're flying anything today that has performance characteristics like the SR-71.

I think our mission parameters have changed and we mainly use drones and satellites today.

I don't believe we have the equivalent to the F-117 that we can roll out like in the First Gulf War that will literally rewrite the script of all modern warfare once unveiled hidden in Skunkworks or their equivalents

It's still going on...we have triple the data mask Navy and AF working in those projects and the 100s of billion dollar sinkholes "missing" from Army budgets...it's far tighter penny pinching today on the "low side", and more still ends up missing.

You can't have tens of thousands of UFOs caught on video every year and it not be something...there was a few sweet black budget aircraft caught in the AZ desert north of Phoenix in April...videoed by a bunch of people from different angles

We just aren't wasting that tech on such trivial ends like war...heck we don't even get a new long range bomber for another decade, we are pusing the buff to fly until 2050

I'm not sure if there really is that many degrees of separation between what we can pull off and what is pubically known.

I bet there is. It may not be in mass production but you can bet they have a few prototypes flying and could ramp production if needed.

You mentioned the F-22... the F-22 first came about in 1981. It wasn't introduced until 2005.

That's 24 years later.

Think of the crap they're probably working on right now that won't be introduced for another 25 years, and things that they are working on they may never become public.

The pilots pretty much all said that watching a SAM detonate behind them looked like an implosion because of the change in perspective as they left the fireball behind.

Curious statement - I don't think there were any rear windows on the SR-71. See pics:

One of the perks of my job is an invite to LMAir every year. The people and stories are truly amazing.

Regarding current tech, it's not difficult to research where OSD is sending money. And the massive push for hypersonics research should tell you something.

They had two rear view mirrors that gave them limited vision behind and to the side

They also had a periscope that let them look aft about fifteen degrees on either side of the plane's axis. They could check the engines, rudder trim, contrails, incoming missiles, etc. visually.

I think the SR71 pilots may have been closer to astronauts rather than true pilots.

I love the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. I go there about once every two years.

That place is amazing. If you enjoy aviation at all, you have to check that place out. It's free too, IIRC.

These former Blackhawk pilots are chattier than Navy SEALs.

It's been nearly 20yrs since the plane was decommissioned. Every other country knew we had it and knew we were flying overhead. What's the problem?

My brother was a CH-53E pilot, he tells a story about it overshooting it's landing in CA and going over MN to circle back moving faster than a 30-06 bullet. That and it leaking like a sieve on the ground.
