These former Blackhawk pilots are chattier than Navy SEALs.

If you were a Blackbird pilot, you might brag a little bit too.

It reminds me of Jack Nicholson's character in Tears of Endearment. Somebody is giving him shite about thinking he's special. He replies, "I'm one of twelve men to walk on the moon. I AM special."

I was next to an SR-71 today at the Air Force Museum in Dayton today. I've been several times since I moved to Cincinnati, but it's still a great museum that I could spend a week in and not see it all. New building recently opened so that you didn't have to get on a shuttle to go see the presidential plane collection. To top it off, it's a free museum!!

random thought I had today about aviation

The old quote is "There are old pilots and bold pilots but no old bold pilots".

Chuck Yeager is 94.

In WW2 Yeager escaped on foot through Spain after being shot down over France.

I'll drop this as I usually do in Blackbird threads.

Go Google Sled Driver by Brian Shul. It's out of print and PDF copies can be found online. It's a fantastic read.

The first museum I have a real memory of being at (@ Wright-Patterson), I saw a broken wooden prop from a Wright Brothers' plane there prolly about 1966.

Damn, I'm getting old.

I love the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. I go there about once every two years.

Yes and no. Some were faster, some were slower. None of them could catch up to the SR before they ran out of fuel and detonated, though. While they were trying to gain 13 miles of altitude, the SR was getting a mile further away every two seconds.

The pilots pretty much all said that watching a SAM detonate behind them looked like an implosion because of the change in perspective as they left the fireball behind.

I remember reading years ago that the Blackbird set a record for flying coast to coast in a little over one hour. I believe it took off and circled over the Pacific Ocean while it refueled in the air. When topped off it took a bee line for the east coast. A little over an hour later... hello Atlantic Ocean.

it did that an it's first "retirement" flight, on the way to the Smithsonian, and they would always have to hit a tanker shortly after takeoff, after it began to expand and the leaks stopped
