And I still don't understand your point
the answer is 1 or 9 depending on how you view the division symbol as a division sign or fraction.

The equation is flawed, so arguing is pointless

It's math, not philosophy.

I love that there's still debate over it, too.

Not:

EDIT: the sign in a fraction is a division sign...

The answer is 9 because the answer is 9.

PE-MD-AS. And when there are two that are in the same group "MD" in this case, you go from left to right. So.... 9

The way it is written is..

6/2(2+1)

which can be deciphered as

6
_

2(2+1)

or

6/2 * (2+1)

on an actual test or math program it would show up correctly but when typing it on a message board like the OP did it can be confused for either

why don't you just clarify the problem? Is it:
X =(6/2)(2+1)
or
X=6/(2(2+1) )

ETA: outer parenthesis

You right. I meant to post is it?

X= (6/2)(2+1) or X =6/(2(2+1))

Sorry I was multi-tasking and forgot the outer parenthesis

I've appropriately since swallowed my pride and pulled the pin on my own grenade.

Even had the courtesy to use "ETA" rather than erasing my original insult so everyone could point and laugh.

Lol at people who think pemdas is mathematical law. Multiplication and division are the same thing. So is addition and subtraction. It absolutely is not necessary to do multiplication before division or addition before subtraction. And the left to right argument is asinine. This may all be something you learned in 4th grade, but it has no actual relevance. As others have stated, the equation is poorly written, like a sentence without commas. Different people can interpret it different ways.

I've taken more 3000 and 4000 level math classes than I ever wanted to.
