I tried everything from violin, drums, guitar, & tuba, I couldn't carry a tune or a beat in a bucket.

I was known to whip out my instrument in band class.
Sorry, that was terrible. It's almost 1 in the morning.

I excelled at trumpet from middle through high school--I toyed with applying to Juilliard--was becoming very good at saxophone. Then I went to LSU and joined TGBFTL, and realized that I was pretty fricking average.
A split lip courtesy of an LSU football player's fist ended my trumpet playing career at the tender age of 21. Sold my Bach trumpet for $200 and drank it all over the next couple weekends.
I tried guitar when I was ten, but even then, my fingers were too stubby and fat and I didn't have one of those pinky fingers that could reach the top E string three frets down from the rest of my fingers like most good guitarists have.

I've been playing guitar for 35+ years, though I don't play much anymore because it fricks with my neck too much. Never was great, and can't play lead at all. But I can crank out '80s-'90s heavy metal pretty decently - Ozzy, Metallica, Pantera, AC/DC, etc. I'm strictly a power chord cruncher. I have a sweet '81 Les Paul Custom Black Beauty that outweighs my talent.

Played the trombone from 4th grade up through my senior year of college. Did jazz band, pep band, marching band, concert ensembles, etc. Haven't played in about 4 years now, think I hit a breaking point after too much band in college. Lotta fun though and I appreciate anyone else who puts in the effort to be a musician

Although not really relevant to OP, this is a good place to post. In 29 and started piano lessons about a year ago. I really enjoy it and it's become a fun thing for me to work on in my free time. I'm not good though, obviously. I'm not naturally good with music. But my teacher says he's really impressed so that's cool

The most discouraging thing about working on getting better at guitar is, from my own experience, realizing just how many thousands of hours it takes to become an excellent guitar player who can play and sing songs like Little Wing, Pride and Joy and Crossroads note for note, including lead parts.
Once one delves into the process, he realizes why the most famous guitar players of our times are either true geniuses for which most things are easy OR that the individual is socially awkward because he has spent such a huge chunk of his life practicing guitar instead of socializing.

I am an above average/good rhythm guitarist.
I am a below average lead guitarist.
...so I guess I would say have not excelled at the instrument, but I confidently hold my own.
I failed at the drums!

I think I found your problem. I've got a '78 and that thing could double as a boat anchor.

I played trombone in middle and high school. I was good by high school standards. I didn't play in college, but picked it up again last summer (I'm 30 now) and started seriously working on getting better. I just play for fun, though.
I'd like to learn another instrument outside of brass, but the older I get, the more difficult it is and the less patience and time I have. I do like being able to play something that isn't found in every household collecting dust.
All of my brothers play or played instruments, and one of my brothers currently makes a living on the saxophone.

I was in the army with a guy that could play everything you listed as well as anyone I ever heard. In his down time all he did was play...ever. He didn't own a car or go out or anything. He was married to his guitar and it was all he wanted to do.
That's how you get to that level. Those guys are obsessed.

-Piano soloist with the Northwestern State University Orchestra at age 17
-Played keyboards for several bands throughout the south US in early to mid 70s
-Church organist for several churches (will NEVER do that one again - church politics is the dirtiest of all and too much bullshite)
-May put together a R&B project after I retire; then again may not - depends upon if I am willing to put up with the headaches that go with a band.

I'm ok. Played through college. I need to get back into it...community orchestra or something.

I play drums and percussion. I used to parade with Mardi Gras Indian tribes sheen i lived in Nola. I still have an open invite with the Wild Tchoupitoulas if I ever move back there. I got to play fest a couple times. I was a little different, in that I used a Balkans brass band drum instead of an African drum like they normally use. That, and I'm a white guy who participated in Mardi Gras Indian traditions like St Joseph's night and Super Sunday.
In Colorado, I've been playing a lot of Cajon. The band I've been in for a few months just finally got a rough demo together, and we booked a couple gigs really quick.
I also play the full kit, a set of triple bongos, washboard (washboard chaz style) and pretty much any hand percussion other than a djembe (i can play it well, but I'm not a hippie, so I don't).
I'd like to add an Indian dhol, a wrap around washboard, and an Irish bodhran to my collection.
I am mad at myself for not being proactive, and learning some basic rhythm guitar and bass. And since my family has some great musicians, I have no excuses.
