Spinoff for those who do not have trucks... How do you get by without one?

We need to upgrade our conveyance capacity and get a minivan. We currently have a truck and car that are paid off (both 2007 models), and I'm considering selling one of them or keeping them both (would be an increase in auto insurance to cover 3 vehicles).

My question to those of you without trucks, do you really find that you need one often and miss having one? What do you do about it?

I'm torn on this because I do not tow anything, and I occasionally throw something in the back out of convenience and some moderate loads of things like bags of dirt.

Maybe once or twice a year im like "this would be easier with a truck"

And usually I can find a friend or family member willing to let me use it if it's that serious

I also borrow if I need one but if I didn't have one to borrow, I would rent one. You can rent them very cheap if you don't need one all the time.

Only time I've ever needed a truck is while moving and its easy enough to borrow one from a family member.

I have an SUV, so it's not quite like I can't get anything around. But I really only need a truck a few times a year. And I just lay the back seats down and use a sheet to protect everything. If I really didn't have access to borrow a truck and couldn't do that, renting a truck from a big box hardware store or U-Haul isn't all that expensive.

My dad has a truck, 2 of my best friends have a truck, my SO has an SUV, and her mom has a minivan. I manage.

I've had a car for the last eight years, until this past March. I bought a truck. Didn't notice how much not having a truck held me back from accomplishing certain things. I would always have to wait for my dad to be available if I needed some lumber, or to move this or that. Well now if I feel like doing some deck work, or fence work, I don't have to plan in advance for when my dad can come over and go with me to get the materials. I can just hop in the truck and run to the lumber store, or lowes, or where ever. Its liberating.

Sometimes I wish I had the space like a truck does, but most of the time I don't really need the space.

I've driven a pickup for so long I think I'd be lost without one. I don't even pay attention to cars unless I happen to notice an exotic or something. If I were forced to buy a car tomorrow I wouldn't know where to even start.

Sometimes I have the opposite thought. How do guys with trucks get by? My golf clubs stay in my trunk year round. It must be a pain in the arse to never be able to keep bigger things in your vehicle unless you have a cover.

Cut up the bodies and stuff 'em in a big garbage bag. Fits easily in the back of my '67 Electra. Haven't you ever seen Goodfellas?

They beg friends to help them.

Its really annoying.

One of my best friends was one of those "I'm not a redneck, I don't need a truck" douchebags and he is constantly begging for someone to let him use their truck on FB.

Anyone that owns a house needs a truck.

I had a 4wd f150, but had to sell it due having a wife and two kids, and being the only one working. Bought a minivan and I drive her mid size SUV. It just wasn't financially viable. 12 mpgs around the city was insane. Like someone else posted, there is 2-3 times a year I could use it. Not worth the 70-80 bucks a week to fill it up, and maintenance that goes with a large truck. The minivan's 3rd row stows, so I can fit 15 bags of mulch in it.

ETA:

As soon as I can afford it, I will probably get a 4 door Tacoma, or similar truck. I just love having a truck. Probably won't need it, but I can see me taking my boys camping on the reg.

Haven't owned one in years. The few times I have needed is not enough reason for having to live with a pickup truck.

It usually cost me a couple beers to have someone help out with their truck. Or rent a small trailer or Uhaul truck for 20-30 bucks.
