Spin-off: return of the mid-sized truck

With the crazy prices of trucks these days, do you think this new crop of mid-sized trucks will spur a revolution?
Points:
1. These new mid-sized trucks look damn good, especially the ones that have a small lift and nice wheels and 4x4.
2 fuel economy
3. The vast majority of truck owners don't need a full sized truck. They THINK they do but in reality they only need two rows of seats and a bed.

Tacomas are great trucks
Honestly I'd be ok without the back row of seats. It would just turn into a place for me to throw things.

Don't get me wrong. I LOVE the Tacoma but at the current prices, I'd rather buy a full size truck without the limited specs
The GMC Canyon with the diesel got my attention but scarcity made it difficult to obtain.

I love my Tacoma and will probably drive it forever.
Then I'll buy another one.

There are days I miss my old ZR2 like this one. I'm thinking of getting a midsize in the next couple of years.

Of course once you max the options on one you're probably looking at about 40K anyway

No, because you can get a fullsize with equal equipment for the same price. They aren't much more efficient than their big brothers, and much less capable at moving people and cargo.

I think its better than it was.

You aren't saving that much. That's what's sad.
Building a dodge diesel from scratch is still the best deal to be found at a dealership.
Personally, I'll never buy new again. We made the jump from two new cars and three play vehicles to just three play vehicles.
Saved $1400 a month even after going from 40 to 15 mpg.

The farse of the small truck. Most don't do much better than a full size.

Looks are subjective...I think they look great.

You can get a F150 for basically the same price as a Taco. Taco's are great trucks, but I wouldn't call them mid-size at all.
One of the reasons full size trucks are so popular is because with the 4 full doors it now fits 4 adults comfortably, taco's are close to that but not quite. You can now use your F150 for family road trips, to take 3-4 clients to lunch, to complete the weekend project, and they get average mileage to drive to work everyday.

If I ever stop towing a 5er, I'll go back to one. I really liked the Dakota I had despite it being a Dodge.

I like the remodeled Colorado once they got rid of the POS 5 cylinder engine.

Fuel economy isn't that much better for it to make a huge difference. And the price isn't far off either when you get a decent package (with the smaller cab, I'm personally going to want a nicer interior if I'm driving it every day) I think there is a market for them. But they are pricing themselves out of it right now. Most people just say what the hell and buy a full sized.

No. Here's why:
1) They are not that much cheaper at all. They advertise a super-low teaser price for them, but that's for a stripped-down, option-less 2 wheel drive. They probably don't even have any of those on dealer lots. Once you get a decent option package and 4x4, you are looking at essentially the same price as a full-size. So people think, well, hell, why not get a full-size?
2) The gas mileage is not that much better. It's a couple of points difference. That's not enough to sway most people.
If they were decidedly cheaper and offered a marked improvement in fuel economy, YES. But they aren't/don't so it's just less truck. Like someone wants to sell you a normal sized candy bar for $0.01 less than a King Size. The only people who would buy the normal sized bar in that example are people who want to brag about how healthy they are and what wise decisions they make. Same with the mid-sized trucks. People justify them by saying they are easier to park and getting preachy like "Most people really don't need a full size". You don't hear people say "It's a much better deal and gets a lot better gas mileage".
