This is still tGOAT small to mid-size truck ever made. My grandpa and dad both drove theirs for over 20 years and well over 200k miles and did nothing buy put tires and oil changes into it.

Play vehicle: a vehicle that is slightly impractical as a daily driver but fun to drive. A jeep, a 4runner, and an xterra.

Is the Toyota Tacoma truly a "mid-sized" truck?
I get the visual appeal. It seems to me that they just appear bigger because of the wide fender molding and larger tires. The trucks are even jacked up higher to appear bigger so they have to add the mud flaps to close that gap between the ground and truck for the illusion that it's a bigger truck. Especially since it's marketed as such, with the "Prerunner" package to make a 2x4 truck look like a 4x4.
It's clearly obvious when I see a base model without all of the body side molding, large tires and mud flaps. Then compare that to the one that is commonly seen about. They're the same truck, it's just made to look bigger.
Base Tacoma:
Most commonly seen Prerunner 4x2 or 4x4 Tacoma:
O even compared the interior dimensions of the current Tacoma to a 2011 Ford Ranger. The Tacoma doesn't look to be that much larger than the retired compact truck on the inside.
Tacoma:
Head Room: 40.0"
Hip Room: 53.6"
Leg Room: 41.7"
Shoulder Room: 57.7"
Ranger:
Head Room: 39.2"
Hip Room: 52.7"
Leg Room: 42.4"
Shoulder Room: 54.5"
These dimensions are for a Tacoma Access Cab (extended cab) to a regular cab Ranger

My god Honda swung and missed (again) with their new ('17) Ridgeline.
It's just absolutely butt-ugly from every angle.

The difference between a 4x4 and 4 door mid size truck and full size is less than $4,000 with everything else equal. You can't compare top of the line because the full size trucks have many more features. The 6 cylinder full size trucks are usually within 2-3 mpg of the mid size also. When you are talking 18-20 or 20-22 it's basically the same.
The mid size will never be much lower in cost on the foreseeable future because so many full size trucks are sold that the costs are lower. It's basically the same man hours to make both, it's all about the size of the parts and the increase in the amount made of full size drops the price to make them negligible. There's been multiple articles on this.
The main difference though again is full size 4 door trucks are a good fit for 4 adukts. If you are in any kind of business where you take coworkers, clients, etc. out then you don't want to be in a taco, canyon, etc. The back seats are like the back of a mid size car, simply slightly squished. People are willing to pay the $2-4000 more for that and it's hard to blame them.

It's ugly as hell. But I do like some of the features the Ridgeline has.
Overall, if you are looking for a four door mid-size truck. You might as well go with the king.

Sold my 06' pre-runner (205k miles) in Jan. Bought a 16' 4x4 off-road. Enjoying it.

My tacoma can haul a fully loaded 16' double axle trailer with ease. Brake controller works great and transmission takes it like a champ. Brakes work well but I went with aftermarket drilled and slotted.
I've never put my old Ram through more. I doubt I will ever haul more than 6500 pounds.
The most I put on the truck so far was a seven series on a tow dolly.
