Somebody just bought my breakfast for me in the drive-through...

...and there was no one behind me to keep the chain going...
What is the protocol there? Was I supposed to leave a $5 for the next person? A $10?
I just graciously tipped my hat to the person in the silver Tahoe as they drove away but I kinda feel guilty and I don't want the karma gods to smite me. Do I just wait till next time someone is behind me and return the favor?

I think your safe. The chain has to break some time. Pay if forward later in the day.

I would just pay it forward the next time I went through. Not much you can do without anyone behind you.

or buy a $5 gift card and give it to a homeless person.

If everyone is buying for the person behind them is there a nice deed even being done?

i always do it at starbucks because work is paying for it.

just enjoy your free breakfast ang go about your day.
The person who started the dirve through pay it forward is just a self serving POS who loves to brag about what a great person they are...
There is no such thing as a truly selfless act unless it is done by accident.

I think you are incorrect with this.

You should have left something......eventually someone would have driven up next in line.
By breaking the chain you'll die later today.....slow & painfully......so you have that going for you

I don't.
If you get any sort of self pleasure or satisfaction out of what a good person you are then your act is not truly selfeless.

Been happening a lot with people in my area of town the past month. Many friends have posted and talked about it, it must be catching on for some reason in a lot of places. I passed it on myself last week at Starbucks.

I mean...do you know that the person in front of me is going to brag to others about it? If it makes them feel better buying some dude's breakfast, is that so bad?
I've never been a part of one of these chain things so I didn't know the protocol.
I should have known the OT would hate simple kind gestures

I don't hate it, but if the previous persons intent was to buy you breakfast then by buying the next person you basically turned them down.
Just accept the free breakfast and pay it forward later.

they do it because they feel obligated to not be the a-hole that ended the chain. who knows, it may be a cnn.com top story if they did end it during a busy line.
since you were the last one in line, enjoy your free breakfast.
