Not looking for recognition or anything in return is pretty selfless.

Paying for the person behind you in line and expecting it to continue is pretty stupid when the chain never ends. Nobody came out ahead.

Pay for own crap and I'll pay for mine.

Not to mention the judging looks you get from a teenager at Chik-fil-a if you decide not to pay it forward.

OMG a teenager you don't know is judging you! How are you going to look at yourself in the mirror anymore??

Wait until there is another clear opportunity and start another chain.

This. I don't eat fast food anymore. I'm trying to live a healthy lifestyle.

If it makes them feel better buying some dude's breakfast, is that so bad?

It isn't bad. Displaced is just making a kind of philosophical point.

sure you can. that is exactly what that happy feeling that you get is.

It's a selfless act when the person can do nothing in return for you.

I don't.

If you get any sort of self pleasure or satisfaction out of what a good person you are then your act is not truly selfeless.

This wasn't an interesting or edgy viewpoint when I heard it on the tv show Friends back in the 90s when you were in preschool.

Thsi is false, you can certainly derive satisfaction for doing something and it still be selfless.

The difference is the intent. If you do it intending to do it partially because it makes you feel better, then yes. But you can do it completely selflessly but the end result is you are still drawing personal satisfaction of seeing someone enjoy whatever you did for them.

they do it because they feel obligated to not be the a-hole that ended the chain
They did?

Ya don't say!!! What an irrelevant statement.

Doesn't ruin my day. But I see through it most of the time. It's more than likely bragging rights on their part via social media "OMG, just bought some guys lunch behind me! I'm such a great person and people like me."
What I learned from this thread is that too many people watch the news these days and just think everyone/everything in this world is bad. There are so many good people doing good things in the world today but you don't hear about it much, so people, like in this thread, just don't believe someone would do a nice thing for someone else just for the heck of it.
