That's a good strategy if you are initiating the good deed. But when you're the victim of some righteous a-hole who pays for your food, you don't find out until you hit the window. Then you're guilted into buying the persons behind you. Not to mention the judging looks you get from a teenager at Chik-fil-a if you decide not to pay it forward.

I got a milkshake paid for me once at Chik-fil-a and I paid for the person behind me. I should have known by the mini-van, but needless to say I was out about 25$ over a measly milkshake... fricking do gooders.

The single time I found myself in a line of cars at a Wendy's doing this, I looked into my rear view to see how many people were in the car behind me. I was fine paying for a couple of meals (I was only getting one meal myself), but no way was I buying a car load of teenagers $8 meals.

I think you are incorrect with this.
No, he is right. The person doing the selfless act actually gets a benefit from it, thus not making it selfless. The benefit is self gratitude. The feeling of doing something good is the benefit, thus making the selflessness of the act null and void. Kind of weird, but we studied it in philosophy and ethics.

Doesn't ruin my day. But I see through it most of the time. It's more than likely bragging rights on their part via social media "OMG, just bought some guys lunch behind me! I'm such a great person and people like me."

Regardless, there are better ways to serve the community if you really want to make a difference.

It's happen twice for me, and ended with me both times.

First time it happened, i gave the girl my card and she took it and said the guy in front of me paid for my meal. I said "why?" She said, after a few seconds of confusion, just being nice i guess, do you want to pay for the people behind you? My response "Nope, but can i get more than just a coffee now?"

I don't think anyone thinks they are "making a difference" by buying someone's breakfast

I did pay for an old ladies groceries last week, she was about to write a check for $15 and it didn't look like she was going to be very quick about it. I told the girl just to scan mine with hers and I'll cover it.

That wasn't to be nice though

Nothing is wrong with it, but that is is atta boy. Sure he may get some joy out of buying their coffee, but he is also doing it to please himself.

there is no such thing as a truly selfless act.

Seems like whenever I do this, I always end up in front of the soccer mom whose bill is like $28.

Not gonna lie, I usually end the chain there.

What did you get to eat? Hopefully something better than the oatmeal I just ate. Was it their breakfast burrito?
