I actually work in Ville Platte, so yeah, I have a pretty good feel for the area.
Most of the Ville Platte natives I know live in the Lafayette area. They all decry the changing demographics in Ville Platte, and they are not complaining because they think it's getting too Cajun. That may be clouded by their individual prejudices, don't know?

quote:

I mean, if you need any more proof, here is the former Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, now One Acadiana, trying to rebrand the region as South Louisiana.

They are rebranding their outreach outside of Louisiana. Having travelled a bit outside the state, very few people know what Acadiana is until it is explained as South Louisiana. They are not changing the name but using the recommendations of a national marketing firm based on national survey data. And, of course, it is no longer the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce because it has been repurposed to encompass the Acadian Region - Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Jefferson Davis, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion parishes. That encompasses Ville Platte, as I'm sure you recognize.

quote:

The frickin idiots are actually trying to distance the region from the Acadiana name because "no one recognizes it".

They are trying to appeal to businesses and business recruiters via advertising. I suspect that will end up educating those people about the meaning of Acadiana and the region it encompasses.

quote:

It's about as fake Cajun as you can get. There are Cajun people, but there is nothing about the City of Lafayette that is Cajun, except for their athletic teams, which are "Cajun" in name only.

What makes a city Cajun vs fake Cajun? Are you one of those people who think people need to sound illiterate to be Cajun? Like all those people I know who speak 0 French but sound like English is their second language?

I consider myself Cajun, though I speak no French and have almost no accent (did when I was a child, purposes to mitigate that somewhat). My 81 year old mom spoke no English when she started school but doesn't sound like English is her second language. She was originally from Henry, la. My Dad, from Lafayette, spoke both French and English (his mom spoke no English, his dad was bilingual) and didn't sound illiterate, though he actually was illiterate.

I need a clarification of what fake Cajun is to you, I actually get a little miffed by certain thing like that myself.

I assume that they're from Lafayette because that's where I see them. VP oil field guys are a bit diff because the majority are production hands. Oh and yes VP can def be viewed as 3rd world if small town living is not your thing.

Outside of bars I never see those types of people, and I quit going to bars where they would go to when I was 20.

The frick are we doing? Just leave it as Acadiana. That's a way cooler name. I don't give a shite if people outside of Louisiana don't know what it means. The name makes sense.

The trucknuts jokes are funny, but unfortunately I think the far more common sign of an oilfield baw in Lafayette right now is a For Sale sign

what the hell is up with Lafayette and their obsession with branding?

*ETA:

quote:

Almost two-thirds said the One Acadiana region — it includes Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Jefferson Davis, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion parishes — would be better served by the names Southwestern Louisiana or South Louisiana.

and the actual "southwest" corner of LA wouldn't be included in that label

I don't know. I do know if you start a topic about it, though, you apparently piss a WHOLE LOT OF PEOPLE off.

as a person who grew up in the sister city of Lafayette, they're literally projecting the negative aspects of their reputation

it's hilarious

Does Lafayette's sister city try to rebrand itself as Lafayette? Is it jealous of it's sister for being so cool? Lmao!

BTW, what is Lafayette's sister city?

Lake Charles

we are the ugly step children that will never be BR/Nola, who both emerged in the 70s (and kind of split in the 80s in terms of how we wanted to expand)

but only one of us admits this reality

I'd rather not attempt to be Baton Rouge

New Orleans is my favorite city though.

Lake Charles has always had this mindset of wanting to remain a small community, taking a conservative approach to everything. Lafayette has greatly benefited from that mindset (e.g., all of the oil and gas that became concentrated in Lafayette area). To Lafayette's credit, they've never been afraid of expansion - but this mindset along with a large portion of the economy based on the energy industry makes the area quite volatile.

The reality is that Lake Charles has a ton going for it, in comparison to Lafayette - petrochem industry, port and ship channel, all of the water access, outdoor activities such as great hunting and fishing, gaming with its proximity to Texas. And looking at the past few years, it looks like Lake Charles is exploding (perhaps in spite of itself, but that's a different discussion) and Lafayette is struggling due to the price of oil. It will be interesting to watch how the two cities handle the next decade or so, as the landscape could be drastically different than it has been for the past 30-40 with these two...

Don't be mad because 90% of Baton Rouge can't even make a roux and make fun of REAL Cajuns, though they want to be called a part of Cajun country, LOL
I'm from BR and certainly don't want to be part of Cajun country, but I like living next to the area.

And I can make a roux, it's not like it's some real difficult task.

100%

they're risk takers and it's great during the boom but terrible during the bust. they have this mindset of being this elite city, hence why another example of their obsession of re-branding is so funny. there is a cultural undercurrent of style over substance in lafayette

lake charles is much more conservative and risk averse and that has limited some nice things but our floor is much higher. we're more of an everyman/salt of the earth town. it used to be really insular with old money controlling a lot but the explosion in SLC has broken that cabal and it's improved a great deal since

even then, LC is never going to be a nice/fun as Laffy during its boom periods
