We could close 50% of the "institutes of higher learning" in this state and not lose one ounce of future brainpower. FACT. We have too many colleges.

I bet, everyone spent a lot more time working on that project than what was expected. I like money but I don't really want to work a deep foundation project anywhere near that part of campus.

From the way I understand it, state government is spending more (overall) on education than they did in the past. The "cuts" were to offset the increased cost to the state for TOPS. In year 1 of TOPS, they funded $50m (as an example)for TOPS. In year X of TOPS, they state funded $250m (as an example) so the extra $200m had to come from somewhere so the state cut the $$ sent to education by $200m.

NOTE - The above figures are used as an example. The real numbers are out there but I don't have time to search right now.

The contractors had to be monitored very well. They weren't supposed to do any work unless he was there. They did a couple of times, and released spores and shite everywhere. Had to bring in a cleanup crew, so that set them back a couple of weeks each time.

It was definitely a huge job

maybe if they didnt make it next to impossible to work at LSU they'd have a better plan and better resources to get all these projects done at a reasonable price

Ooph. It hit me when I started working for UT a while back. LSU is behind, for sure.

That sucks.

I worked for a local monitoring and abatement company almost 20 years ago. Do you know if he works for the company that did PFT because I saw one of the guys that works for them out there.

I'm not defending Jindal here, but congress is the one that created this problem by have only medical and higher ed as cut-able. Everything else in the state budget is protected

CEBA 4Life

Not sure. He's done a few building renovations on campus. Since I moved to New Orleans, I don't talk to him regularly

LSU deferred maintenance so they could maintain and enhance the status of their overpaid, underworked, irresponsible academic elitists. That's why universities exist in the current model of higher ed.

Are you retarded? They fired a frick load of really good professors and replaced them with grad students and worthless diversity shitheads. When was the last time you took a freshman or sophomore class? They are either severely overloaded with students, or have a bunch of sections....all taught by grad students.

The goal of almost every university now is to get grants, not teaching. They want teachers who will author papers and get grants. Colleges have a minimum number of papers for a teacher to submit every year (usually 2). If they don't meet that or can't bring in enough money, they are expendable.

Also, they must have these useless degree programs or their accreditation will be under review

Higher ed doesn't want professors in classrooms. As you said they want grants so they can siphon off obscene overhead that jacks up the pay of academic losers with hokey new titles and positions. It all goes to the pay and perks of the chosen ones who see students as bothersome cash cows.

And increasing LSU's budget will just feed the same beast, not put good professors in classrooms.

LSU lost a great number of professors during the budget cuts. There was no raises for over 5 years and asked to do more with less. They simply left for greener pastures. Many universities across the country were not hit hard by budget cuts and started cherry picking the best at LSU. Some followed as well. It was a nasty time at LSU. Remember the SAVELSU campaign?

As a cost saving measure they started having more and more graduate assistants teach courses at 13K or 21K per year.

Each professor that brings in a grant the university scoops 44% off the top for building use, office use, phone, health benefits, etc... if the NOAA cuts are indeed 26% you will certainly feel an impact at LSU.

There is no set amount of grant money to bring in nor number of published papers but when applying for tenure its always best to have that and more.

I found the TOPS spending info....

TOPS BY YEAR
1998-1999

Total TOPS cost: $54,033,633
Total TOPS students: 24,164

LSU-Baton Rouge:
$21,568,730 | 7,951 students

Louisiana Tech University:
$4,280,741 | 1,774 students

University of Louisiana-Lafayette:
$4,173,806 | 2,247 students

University of New Orleans:
$3,563,457 | 1,623 students

Southeastern Louisiana University:
$3,054,791 | 1,563 students

**************************

2015-2016

Total TOPS cost: $283,651,801
Total TOPS students: 52,377

LSU-Baton Rouge:
$103,563,839 | 14,705 students

University of Louisiana-Lafayette:
$36,623,413 | 6,987 students

Southeastern Louisiana University:
$22,241,983 | 4,451 students

Louisiana Tech University:
$22,046,278 | 4,047 students

University of Louisiana-Monroe:
$14,760,946 | 2,710 students

Year 1 (1998-1999), TOPS cost the state $54M. Last year (2015-2016), TOPS cost the state $283M. Thus one of the reasons for the "cuts" to education.
