So LSU has over $700 million dollars in deferred maintenance costs.

I mean this is a disgrace. That's almost a billion dollars.

LSU will never be the premier public research institution it deserves to be when its facilities are falling apart.

Seems like they just let buildings fall apart. It's ridiculous.
Dat lazy river doe.

That is hard to believe.
When you see figures like this coming from higher ed, and you see a list of megaprojects that DOTD is dreaming about doing; you know its time to grab your wallet.
I'm not saying the universities aren't tight on cash, but 700 million dollars in deferred maintenance? What are they calling maintenance? It's probably not maintaining what they have, but replacing old with new too.
But nothing is more upsetting than watching people on TV crying because the roof leaks and they don't have money to fix it as if its a badge of honor to have a leaky roof and waste paper baskets in place to catch the water.

I'm calling BS on that figure.
We are building brand new high schools for 20MM

That was actually voted on by students, and a fee was tacked on specifically for it

It's the same mismanagement that LSU did in the 80's.

It's a grossly inflated stat. They include the costs of replacing multiple buildings (Lockett and Middleton) in that figure.

I knew it didn't add up, 700 million dollars will change a lot of bad light fixtures, fix roofs, changeout AC units, fix utilities, sidewalks, etc.
I would not call replacing buildings maintenance.

As long as student loans exist, money will never be a problem for LSU. Just raise tuition- it's not like the students care how much money they will pay back 20 years later.

Considering they are replacing Middleton with a big patch of grass, I wouldn't include that one. Unless the demo is going to cost a ton. I sure hope there isn't asbestos in that monster. That would cost a damn fortune.

Bobby Jindal cut higher ed spending budgets to the point most universities cannot keep up with maintenance
This is not an exclusively LSU problem
Maintenance delays are the easiest way to "trim the fat" when the state tells you that what you expected to come in won't actually be arriving
I absolutely believe there are $700M in deferred costs.
Walk through buildings such as Middleton, Lockett, Tureaud, Chemical Eng, Huey P Long and you see signs of neglect everywhere
Furthermore, the LSU heating/AC service infrastructure is massively outdated and leaks/breaks down on the regular
Want to know whats worse? Their IT infrastructure is starting to crumble now too due to budget cuts

If you've ever been a student at LSU, you know that figure isn't far off.
Prob 70% of the campus needs to be demolished and rebuilt, wiring updated, streets, drainage redone. The problem is that instead of building new buildings, they just sunk more and more money into maintaining the crap they have now.

They're replacing it with a new building at a different location, and yes, the tear down will cost a fortune in asbestus abatement.

The new Urec just opened and it is unreal. It was overwhelming walking through that place.

Urec still isn't finished after years of work. They opened the main entrance tho.

Doesn't Middleton have a basement? That can be cheap to safely dig up or condemn.

Well yeah. I don't understand why people continue to call for LSU to keep cutting down costs when so much of the university needs repairs, updates, or completely new construction.

Unlike other states, LSU can't raise tuition without legislative approval.
