Osteen preaches "prosperity gospel", basically if you're a good Christian, God is going to reward you with money, the right job, no problems in your life..........none of that being in scripture, mind you. But him living in opulence is a good image for people who buy into that.

This is 100% the truth. The gospel he preaches isn't the gospel from the Bible, but it's a message that resonates with a lot of people who deep down are good people.

Why would you let people in while you are dealing with a mess and not sure if more water was going to come in? Too much liability at that point.

Once water gets into a building, it rises so much faster because you now have confined space.

That's part of it, yes.

lot of people here dislike osteen because they see him as fake

Because he is. He represents everything that's "wrong" with religion.

media and left don't care.

they see him no differently from any god-fearing southern baptist minister and will treat him with as much hate.

It is the same way I see him, but I hate the media more.

I dislike Olsteen as much as the next rational person, but it was typical stupid FB shite that got this started. It will end up being a boon for his empire. Think about how his thousands of loyal followers are going to be even more loyal to him after he was basically accused of being cold-hearted.

He's probably sitting back grinning ear-to-ear thinking of how much more money he can ask from his congregation.

The red cross and LEPCs have a list of shelters they can activate in emergencies. The shelters usually have access to kitchens, bathrooms etc....I would be interested to know if the giant former basketball arena was ever on any of those lists. That would mean the "church" had considered helping people in the past before they were pressured into it.

Also, just curious, how many smaller churches in the city of Houston opened their doors?

How many critics of Osteen in Houston and the nearby areas opened up their homes to a displaced family?

Mattress Mack- Jim McIngvale, owner of Gallery Furniture opened his stores to flood victims immediately. On the Christly scale...Mattress Mack is the real deal and Joel Osteen the charlatan.

Because what you end up with is people, when going through rough times, believing it's because they aren't faithful enough, or not praying enough. Someone who would believe that their child is dying because they weren't a good enough Christian is horse shite and the exact opposite of the message of the Gospel. If you're only a believer because you're hoping to get a better paying job, there's really no genuine love of Jesus. Kind of like a trophy wife.

I've never heard this (or gotten this impression) from Joel Osteen. He's probably one of the most level headed preachers I've seen on TV.

But people like to hop on the

That's my theory. I don't think flooding/damage was an issue.

Wouldn't his preaching dictate that Christ would provide? I don't think Jesus would let fear get in the way of showing love and compassion.

I respectfully disagree with your assertion. I feel like if I'm a decent and hardworking God fearing Christian, it's not a right for me to have a good job, money and other things. I just feel that God is going to reward those who put a 100% effort into bettering themselves and doing the right thing. Why else would people say "count your blessings". You thank God for what he's blessed you with. You praise him for your needs to be fulfilled, not the things you want and don't have.

I was just telling you how it is traditionally viewed in Christianity, my good friend.

Whether it is right is a different matter.

Then you're not really listening to him. They have straight up said things like "God just wants you to be happy". All He cares about is you being successful. It's a woefully wrong and dangerous message. God is all about your heart, not your checkbook. But you get people who are down on their luck suddenly being interested in church because of what they will hopefully get out of it.

Give Matt Chandler a listen, a pastor out of Dallas. He's been openly critical about the message Osteen likes to put out there or any prosperity preacher. The example I posted about the dying child pretty much comes directly from him. God promises....God, and that's pretty much it. Sure, you can become very successful and wealthy, and there are people who can attain that and not lose sight of what's important (Dave Ramsey being one that comes to mind). But when you get a church that focuses on "you" and not God, it's just headed in the wrong direction.

Basically what NPR said this morning. The leader of a prosperity church must be drenched in prosperity.

don't disagree with a single thing you said. my point is that the media/left don't distinguish osteen from baptists or methodists. they treat them all with the same hate-driven, anti-christian agenda.

I don't want to get too far into this, but I'll just say Christianity in a way requires suffering. If you look at the life of Jesus, His actions and his words were asking things of people that were not easy. When you raise the standards people live by, there will be backlash. Also, doing the righteous thing or the holy thing is usually not the most satisfying thing.
