In the 1990s I lived in Wetumpka Alabama.

The Friday before MLK day I call the car tag office and ask if they were going to be closed for MLK Day.

The lady said No.

I go to the tag office they are closed.

Sign on the door reads

Closed for Confederate Memorial Day.

Confederate Memorial Day is in April and is still a paid state holiday in Alabama. Monday is the Lee and King holiday not to be confused with the Arkansas King and Lee holiday.

I like that on their list of notable people from Biloxi they include one "Michelle Anne Sinclair, actress"...aka Belladonna, AVN Hall-of-Famer.

In Texas, Robert E. Lee's birthday, January 19th, is an official state holiday. It's officially Confederate Heroes' Day!

And the Big Four of Great Americans would be MLK (actual birthday on Jan. 15), Lincoln (Feb. 12), Washington (Feb. 22) and Susan B. Anthony (Feb. 15), so the gals won't feel left out. We also could throw in Elvis Presley (Jan. 8), Henry Aaron (Feb. 5) and Ronald Reagan (Feb. 6) to take care of the arts, sports and the right.

It's a little surprising because Biloxi is hardly racist. The MS Gulf Coast is about as diverse as you get. If any group is racist towards blacks in Biloxi, it's more than likely the fairly large Vietnamese community.

And they're backing off after all the Internet heat. At least the mayor is. BuzzFeed got a hold of it. The Hill got a hold of it There is also a link to this on their twitter.

quote:

Biloxi Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich, responding to a flurry of comments about a city tweet today referring to Monday as “Great Americans Day,” believes the Biloxi City Council on Tuesday should take steps to update the city’s Code of Ordinances to reflect the official federal name of the holiday, “Birthday of Dr. Martin Luthern King Jr.,” commonly known as “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.” “In my opinion,” Gilich said, “that is the appropriate step to take, for the holiday to have the same name as the federal holiday.”

They aren't "gross", and it's not solely because of the barrier islands. The water is clean but is more brackish because of more silt and soil in the water because of the MS and Dog River with the currents.

Growing up in the area we're taught this. We're also taught the barrier islands, while trapping all that silt from the rivers, is protecting us from storm surge. After Katrina I call bullshite and vote for demolition.

Are there any blacks still living in Biloxi? I thought Haley refused to take the federal money to rebuild the homes in the black community and instead used the money -- S600 million -- to dig the port a deeper hole.

I can't see that happening as long as those birds nest out there. For whatever reason, protecting those birds is really serious. Plus, you would get a lot of kick back from all the people who are obsessed with going to the islands every chance they get. I don't understand the attraction. It's fun every once in a while with a good group of people, but I can certainly find better things to do with my time.

The barrier islands are awesome. My father had a motoryacht around Bay St. Louis. Family trips to Ship Island to tour the fort then swim on the north side, where the water was usually green and clear instead of brown, made for a great day. Or anchoring the boat in the Cove on the back side of Cat Island to spend the night and go flounder gigging. Same goes for surf fishing off the point at Cat Island. You must not enjoy the outdoors if you can't appreciate that.
