Years ago you could go to the duty free shop on the ship and buy a litre and take it with you back to your room. Those were the days. I remember getting on a ship in Puerto Rico and walking past the duty free shop in the terminal that had booze stacked up like pyramids. People were buying several bottles and walking on with them. I bought a couple of $10 litres of absolut and walked them right on

I've had success with the wine bottle method. Use a red wine bottle that is green glass and has a larger label. Mix some blue and red food coloring in a pitcher until it's the same look as the wine.
Fill, recork, and re-seal the top with a shrink cap.
Same goes for white wine bottles for clear liqour, with some yellow food coloring and a brown tinted bottle.
We did this on the one and only cruise I've been on and we got the booze in no problem. I didn't have to pay for that ridiculous liqour package on the boat.
It's definitely trashy, but you know, when in Rome.

So what do they do when they catch you trying to sneak alcohol on board?

Wife and I went on a Carnival Cruise out of NOLA last summer and had a blast. Wanted just a quick, cheap getaway. Sure, a lot of the people looked like they just left Wal Mart, but so do most people when you get on an airplane. We spent most of our time sitting on the back deck, watching having a drink and watching the water go by. Food, for the most part, was surprisingly good. It was entertaining seeing what most of that crowd thought proper evening dining attire was.
It's not for everyone, but we just mostly stayed by ourselves and had a great time. One of the things I liked the best was you don't have to sit in an airport and airplanes for hours. Just get to the boat, go through security and go have a drink.

Nothing. They just take it and you go about your trip.

Going on a cruise in a few weeks with the gf's family. Think I am going to use the shampoo bottles myself.
I am not cheap, trash, etc.. I just refuse to get ripped off with 12 dollar cocktails all week. I want to relax and drink the whole time without spending a grand on shitty products.

Rum Runners.
The end.
These have a high success rate but the risk is that if they catch you they take them and don't give them back, so you lose the cost of the liquor and the rum runners. If it was an unopened bottle you would at least get it back at the end of the cruise.

They give it to your steward to deliver on the last day.
They metal detect you and pass your bags through an x-ray when getting back aboard. I found a way around it...
Get someone in the Cove balcony and then just toss it to them from the Pier.

Be careful with the shampoo bottles. No matter how many times you rinse there will always be a scent which will work its way into your alcohol. The alcohol should be good for a week or so, so don't fill them until the morning you leave.
You can buy fake shampoo bottles called Shampbooze. They look real and should make it through rather easily.

I use both Rum Runners and the shampoo bottles. I carry on the shampoo bottles to get a better chance of getting through. I have never had a problem in four carnival cruises and one Norwegian.

Valid points. However, Carnival needs to get with the program on their drink packages. Then more people would just buy the drink package and not worry about sneaking on booze. Carnival requires everyone in a cabin buy a drink package if one person wants it, even if one of the persons is pregnant or has an illness not allowing them to drink. They also have a limit of 15 drinks a day, even beer. I, and many people, could easily drink 15 beer a day. Once you hit this limit you can't even buy more alcohol. You are seriously cut off. I get putting a limit but don't tell me I can't buy more alcohol. Carnival is simply way out of touch with its drink package and people will continue to push against it like this.

These are great to take from your room to the pool or even off the boat. Carnival is okay for "might as well" trips and I can't see how someone just couldn't have a good time.

Mouthwash bottles and shampoo bottles do NOT work. Not because you can't get it on, but because no matter what, the booze will pick up the mouthwash or shampoo flavor. No amount of cleaning will fix that.
I'm guessing those smuggling shampoo bottles and sunscreen would work great. What also works is getting on the extra large saline solution bottles (but make sure to wash them out well so you don't get diarrhea).
I love cruises. I just like being out on the ocean and being able to check out a bunch of different countries, being able to gamble, swim, and have stuff to constantly do (or do nothing at all). No shame here about them.

My senior trip I learned this lesson
Had some soapy vodka all week but it wasn't half bad

I used those suncreen flasks. Worked like a charm.

Yeah, but buckets of beer count as one beverage purchase, we found that out the other week. (if you purchase them and have a Cheers sticker on your card)

they work great if they were never used for shampoo or mouthwash like the ones I posted earlier.

Sounds like you don't have the money to be taking this cheap cruise.
