The City Council at the behest of the mayor made a political gesture. Most if not all of those statues are on a federal historical registry and are subject to rules and regulations. To remove those statues, many guidelines have to be met, including placing them in an equally prominent spot and rebuilding/recreating certain historical aspects in said new location.
Again this was political theater, nothing more. If the statues are moved, they will be featured prominently somewhere else.

Racist who imprisoned a minority population based solely on their ancestry. It makes me feel #triggered to see him exalted in such a manner.
We also need to remove the statue of that genocidal maniac from in front of St. Louis Cathedral. I feel #triggered by that one too.
While we're at it we should rename Jefferson Avenue. Slaveowner and rapist. #TRIGGERED.

This statue represents all of us. It will unify us and end all racism.

Would be vandalized every day. I think a better one to throw eggs at would be Obama.

Put up a statue of Bruce Lee and keep the name "Lee Circle."

I think we should put up gallows at every torn down monument and start hanging the garbage that makes New Orleans one of the most crime ridden cities in America

We need a statue of Ignatius Reilly. That would be cool.

What if we got a statue of Superman, then radical Christians could vandalize it with False God graffitti.

What statues should take their place?
One statue of Malcolm X, one of Mitch Landrieu and one of Obama.

Fun fact about that statue, it's positioned in the same place as Ignatius in the opening scene of the book. In the scene he sees the sunset over the river, but if he were looking at the river he would be looking east so it doesn't make sense.
A lot of people thought this was Toole poking fun at the "west bank" being in the east side of the river.
