It isn't the OP. This problem has been on the Internet since it existed. They knew multiple people would get in wrong and truly dig in. Even after I have posted the answer 58 on a scientific calculator, and even after you have stated wolfram alpha says it is 58, people still will say 10 and have the balls to call others retarded

The problem here is the space between the division symbol and the 2(3) makes it look like the product of 2 and 3 is the denominator.

6^2/2(3)+4 is a little more direct.

But really, the whole thing should be written as

(6^2 / 2)(3)+4

for clarity.

That would be a more clear way to write it but we wouldn't get to enjoy all the "it is 10 and you are retarded people"

My HP48GX says it's 58
My Trimble data collector says it's 58
My Carlson Surv CE program says it's 58
So as far as I'm concerned it's 58

Although 58, 3.6, and 10 are defensible, 58 requires no implicit assumptions, and is the therefore the superior answer. I would argue that 10 is the least logical because of all syntax issues possible, / denoting a fraction (i.e., necessary to get 3.6) is the most understandably to not specify.

Therefore, 58 is the most defensible (no implicit assumptions); 3.6 is next (/ denotes a fraction); and 10 is the least defensible.

We need to do one of these threads where everyone states their answer and their occupation.

Any professional engineer who answers 10 ought to have their license revoked.

If the equation was drafted by Congress then, the answer is whatever the Secretary of Education wants it to be, and the Supreme Court will rule that was Congress' intent. The specific text and drafting conventions are not to be interpreted literally, the answer should be whatever causes the least inconvenience to the government's bureaucrats.

I remember the 2 or 288 thread that went 50+ pages and went on days. It was the first that truly hooked me into TD.

I argued 288 to the death because it was obviously right.

In this question, the answer is 58. There is no other possible answer. There is nothing wrong with how the problem is written.

Except it looks like a 3rd grader that's trying to be taught PEMDAS wrote it.

Wow.

Without making assumptions... it's 58 as written.

6 to the power of 2/2(3)+4, or 6^7 = 279,936.
