Why not 3.6?

58 is the correct answer without any added assumptions. The next most logical answer would probably be 3.6 if the assumption is that the / is actually a fraction with the left side on top and the right side on the bottom.

With the given information, it isn't correct to assume 2(3)+4 is a denominator.

This. The p in pedmas means to do the operation with first, otherwise it is just a multiplication sign.

You aren't multiplying before your divide

Acronyms are why America sucks at math. PEMDAS is correct; however, it's split into 4 levels. Within those levels, you go right to left.

1. Parenthesis

2. Exponents

3. Multiplication
Division

4. Addition
Subtraction

As far as Parenthesis, it's doing equations inside the parenthesis. If it is a single number (i.e. 5(6)), it is assumed to be multiplication like that just was.

That would actually be the denominator, but no. If they wanted it to be the denominator, the whole thing would be in parentheses

Step 1: 6^2 = 36

36 / 2(3)+4

Step 2: 36 / 2 = 18

18(3)+4

Step 3: 18(3) = 54

54+4

Step 4: 54+4 = 58

The answer is 58. You can take it to the bank.

So explain why you divided before you multiplied, M comes before D in PEMDAS
