No. They went from a place to grow crops for 4 months out of the year to almost year round. They got lucky.

They built the infrastructure that allowed that place to exist. They were ripped from their homes. They were killed, forced onto ships, not allowed to make port in New York, and sent back across the atlantic.
They were welcomed by the French and spanish in louisiana purely because of their religion.
And oddly, I've yet to hear cajuns truly lament "le grand derangement"... Perhaps because, as a people, we put on our big boy pants and moved the frick on.
