What do I look for?
What am I trying to avoid?
SO likes "vintage" style rings.
She may be interested in alternative gemstones (like sapphire).
What should I be budgeting?

Please no "don't get married posts" and no pics.

Spend 90% of your funds towards the diamond. The band can always be changed but women become attached to the actual stone and that's what they show off.

Harder to find, and decide on, IMO.

Check this out: How to buy an engagement ring

Where are you located?

Call Edberg jewelry in Metairie and ask for Larry.

A pawn shop in Chicago will have what you're looking for.

Here's a solid hint. 99% of the responses in this thread are 100% full of shite.

"My ring appraised for way more than I paid"
"I got a good looking 2 carat for 12,000"
Etc.

Bunch of fricking liars.

If you really want to learn, then listen only to this thread and follow my advice.

Go to a few reputable jewelry stores in your town and speak to trained gemologists or professionals in the jewelry business.

Spend what you feel comfortable spending, nobody can tell you what that is...

diamonds for engagement rings are a ripoff dreamed up by De Beers in a 1938 ad campaign to unload a glut of diamonds they were stuck with

I think the diamond industry came up with that rule.

I'm not engaged (though my girlfriend is not happy about that), but get something you like and can afford. If you want to upgrade later in life, do so, but if the success of your marriage and her happiness in it will depend on the size of the ring you buy, you shouldn't be getting married.

Whatever you are comfortable spending. You can get something beautiful without breaking bank.

Do not do this or a stone other than a diamond.

I might be off base here but...
1-figure out what size/cut you'd like to get
2-colors D, E and F are a huge waste. Live in the G, H and I range.
3-clarity should be SI1 or better. You can get away with an SI2 if the inclusion is near the side and can be covered by a prong

4-Try to talk to a family friend who is a jeweler. Hopefully that will cut down on some of the bullshite extra costs.

5-If you end up going with a round or something similar get 6 fricking prongs. 4 prongs takes away from the roundness and if 1 prong gets messed up you lose the diamond. With 6 prong it would take 2 right next to each other for this to happen

6-insure the damn thing. Not that expensive. CYA man.

No matter what ring you get or how expensive it is, know this: it will be infinitely cheaper than EVERYTHING else that comes after.
